Anybody else switched to console gaming due to high costs of PC gaming?

Thread Starter
I've been a PC gamer pretty much all my life (from the wonderful days when we used to bring our college network down with illegal Doom LAN parties )) but recently, the high cost of upgrades and new technologies (Vista+Core Duo+DX10 cards), its been tough to keep up.

And then one day, I saw the deal for the XBox 360 over at Overstock for $360 shipped, I immediately pulled the trigger since I already have a 57" HDTV and boy oh boy, I never realized that console gaming (especially next-gen) could be as much fun as PC!

And the best part is the simplicity of console gaming.....insert the disk, lay back on the leather couch and u r fragging in minutes without having to post a thread online asking whether your system is capable of running it in the first place or not. Even though the 360 games are like $60 but since I 'joined in' so late, I can buy the older games for less than $40 (GRAW, Oblivion, CoD2, Black, GTA-SA).

Becuase of the 360 and availabilty of good games (plus backward compactible games like GTA-SA), its pushed back my future Conroe build and for the first time in my life, Im not hurrying to get back into PC gaming

I've always preferred console over PC, but for graphics quality the PC blows away even the 360..
Best case for that is Prey, that thing looks like total crap on the 360 and much better on a PC.

ill sneak a question in here.. :ninja:

do you find it worth it to get a hd tv ? does it make the games alot better ?

depends on the console. If you're talking XBox 360 then it makes a HUGE difference. I haven't tried hooking my old xbox up to it

i personally don't like console games because i find it harder to get used to the controllers. the last console i got was the N64 and that is still pretty much the only controller i can use decently. i find the keyboard/mouse is easier for more precise control. i also like RTS sorts of games, and from my perception, there aren't many of those for console, and they are probably not as easy to control.

give it a few years and the carpal tunnel will make you see the evil of mice and keyboards

screw carpal tunnel... like 10+ years of piano and longer using computers all the time, and i don't seem to have issues... yet... and also, add in tennis and fencing, and my wrists should be dead, sort of

only thing consoles are good for are sports and racing games.

what's your age? mine started in the lower 30's and now that I'm 39 it's really bad.

20. i've also started thinking about trying to do more stuff left-handed to even things out.

does switching the type of keyboard you use help out at all?

I did the same thing, bought a 7950, it scored sub mediocre scores on 3dmark...SO I bought a 62 inch dlp and a xbox 360 premium and now the computers sits with its pertty 24 inch monitor....

I love Console gaming, turn it on, and everything works, both wireless controllers BOTH work, never glitch or nothing, games are down to 30new and most about 30 used.

From what I've learned, carpal tunnel comes from the way you sit at a terminal. It's ideal to have the monitor at eye level, but 99 times out of 100 it's going to be below eye level. Ergonomic crap is also pretty much worthless and can actually hurt more than help. Basically, a good setup is going to be pretty ugly, with books or blocks being used to get everything to the correct level and placement..

yeah, using a laptop, it's hard to have the monitor at eye level without the keyboard being excessively high. as for my setup, it really varies with where i am. if i'm in class with the 700m, it's on the desk/table off to the side, at my dorm room, it's on the desk, without too much adjustment, and sometimes if i'm walking with the 700m, it's being held on my left arm while my right hand types and controls stuff. then if i'm using it on my lap, that's another situation. i'm actually more worried about my back and worsening my back problems than getting carpal tunnel (:

i find PC gaming to actually be cheaper, then again i am not hard core, i don't have a 7900gtx 512mb sli setup with a billion gb of ram and a 500gig hdd.. a computer is something you need for work and such anyway...so you already have it, just an extra function is gaming. Consoles are like an extra $500 you gotta spend + games @ $50 a piece.

if anything i think consoles got pretty damn pricey....the PSX and N64 were $100....PS2 and XBOX were like nearly $300...PS3 $500 ... you see where i am going with this. PS5 will cost an arm and a leg

the carpal tunnel comes from a part of your back near the shoulder blade. The therapist was doing tests on me and she hit this one spot and I could definitely feel the spikes.. other spots make everything go numb, it's pretty strange.
I now just have to stop sometimes because it hurts so much and the main problem is you don't notice the pain until you think about it. For some reason your body will adapt to the pain so you don't notice it. The doctor called it turning up the radio. Like when your car starts making noise you just turn up the radio so you don't hear it anymore

BTW, avoid the CTS test if possible. Scraping muscles all over your body with a needle is NOT a fun thing.. it was about 3 hours of teeth grinding..

*Raises hand* Xbox 360 for me. I'll go to the PS3 when it comes out.

PS3= AWESOMENESS. But I will say that owning a console has grown in price, over the years. The games used to me 30 and 40 dollars, and now the are 50 and 60. But when the PS3 comes out that will all be blown away, some games for the PS3 will cost 100$. So the price margin between computer gaming and console gameing anre becomeing closer and closer.
