dv1000 Boot Trouble (Blue screen flashes "registry failure"?) 13 months old.

Thread Starter
When I turn on my computer, it shows the HP logo page, then takes me to the " Windows did not start sucessfully last time" page, with options to start in each mode. I choose any mode and the Windows XP page comes up, it boots, and there is a scroll bar with blue squares racing across the scroll bar. All normal. Then it stays in this stage for a long time, too long.

The screen goes black, but I can tell it is still on. It is not an LCD problem. It stays this way for 30-45 seconds and a blue screen flashes and it starts over again.

The blue screen has two papragraphs that say something like this:

STOP: Registry failure
The registry cannot load the hive or its log or alternate
The system may be corrupt, absent, or not writable

Beginning dump of physical memory
Physical memory dump complete
Contact your system administrator

I talked to HP. I am 20 days passed my warranty. They said they know how to fix it with out the loss of all of my files, etc. But I have to buy a new warranty at $100. This is just crazy, I told him I hadn't had too many problems with it, and now only 20 days after my warranty it breaks down!!

I have taken the battery out, tried it on AC and Battery. Tried it is Safe Mode, etc. It just keeps this cycle.

Please help!

You need to for info on how to repair a broken Xp install.

I think the repair option leaves your file intact, restoring OS files...

Little tip if you have to do a fresh install. (ditto if the repair works..)

1: Partition your hd, putting your DATA on a SEPERATE partition..

Putting your DATA (your files) on the same partition is like hanging pictures of your great, great, great, grandma that can't be replaced in the kitchen, and then the kitchen catches on fire and they're lost forever.

Windows is going to crash and burn, it's not if, it's when..

2: Buy an external hard drive, image your hd, your data, make back-ups. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...658414?ie=UTF8

With a program like Arconis True Image you can make images of your hd, your data and be back up within minutes.

You could also do a chat with HP, and ask them how to repair a windows XP install, and then they could walk you through it. Of course you'll need an XP disk.

The people in the online chat don't usually ask for any identifying computer numbers such as serial numbers or whatever, so they wouldn't know that your warranty expired. Heck, I've even used their chat to get information that helped me fix a non-HP computer! lol. Their chat is one of my favorite features of HP's support, I have never had to call them but instead I just open a chat if I need to ask them questions about my HP pc, and they will walk me through the procedures to fix it.

The blue screen of death with the Stop message should have a hexadecimal number, in this format: 0x1234ABCD, or some variant. You can use that number to look up the specific problem on the MSDN site (Microsoft Developer Network). The explanations are usually very precise.

It could be one of:
a) Disk sector error
b) Memory address error
c) Corrupt system item, such as a DLL

I agree with the other guy above, who suggested swapping the memory card positions first. If you only have one memory card... well, you'll need a duplicate.
