Would an ordinary user appreciate a WSXGA+ screen?

Would an ordinary user appreciate a WSXGA+ screen?

I'm a law grad student who wants to get a good screen since I'll be reading a LOT of material and typing a lot of papers off my laptop. I'll also use it as a dorm room TV, and want something that'll make movies and photos (including editing photos) a joy. Finally, I'm not sure but I may want to get the occasional gaming session in. (A part of me suspects I may have enough fun to play more games and do more graphics or even personal video goofing off.)

I want a 15.4" screen since 17" is too big, and one good option is to get the Asus Z96j, which gives me a 15.4" WSXGA+ high res screen and a X1600 card to have fun with it.

However, just how much use will I get out of the WSXGA+ screen? I saw a notebook screen FAQ that actually recommends plain XGA resolution for gamers so they can run at native resolution, and the same plain resolution for movies. The main recommendation for the high res screen seems to be for people who are nitpicky about graphic editing, or who simply want a lot of space for smaller icons.

On the other hand, I think a lot of people love looking at a Macbook Pro all day, and I was thinking part of that comes from the higher resolution, "better" screen.

I'm a bit confused, obviously. Simply, how much of a joy is staring at a higher res screen every day, and would it be worth it to get it?

(Yes, I plan to go to a store and simply look at them but I'm not sure if a glance at a bunch of screens will do it for me since I've never had a laptop before, and was hoping for other opinions.)

it's true that movies and games will look better up to a certain resolution that they output to or your gpu can handle. that's why you don't see many wuxga resolution lcd tv's being made for dvd watching. higher resolution is very useful if you want to increase productivity because you can have multiple windows open on the same screen showing more or more toolbars in programs. i think typically people feel that wuxga on a laptop screen is overkill unless you are working on an external monitor at least 24" in size. thus wsxga+ is at the high end of a fair compromise between practicality and higher resolution unless you have specific needs towards more pixels. even at wsxga+ you probably won't be able to run games at native resolution with today's gpus at max settings and regular dvds definately dont output to more than 720x480 usually.

if you want a good comparison between the two higher resolutions offered:

and you can see that wsxga+ is a very comfortable resolution without killing your eyes. anything less and you will feel cramped. it is certainly very easy to adjust to wsxga+ from wxga but not so much the other way around.

i think part of why people like looking at macbook pros is because the gui is made to be "pretty"

I'd go for the higher res since you'll be spending time reading, typing, and photo editing. Adjust your font size (if you need to) and turn on clear type. Your eyes will thank you. For gaming, just run at the lower resolution. Personally, I don't notice the stretching when I'm playing a game at lower res on my XPS's 1920x1200 - but I sure like the extra res when I'm coding, writing documents, or photoshopping.

Ive got a 9890 with the WUXGA screen (1920x1200) and use it primarily for gaming and watching DVDs when im working away from home (alot). If I had to choose over again, I would make the same choice. I dont notice any adverse affects from having a screen with too high of a resolution.

go at least wsxga for a good experience. wsxga+ might be even better. wuxga is really overkill for anyone, but wxga...although the most common screen resolution is not very practical due to extremely limited height (800px)

Incidentally, the HP NW8440 does actually list 15.4" WUXGA resolution. Everyone agree this is overkill for a 15.4"?

I agree that its overkill for a 15.4", not for a 17" though

my suggestion is to try and look for one yourself.. if you can't and you're torn between the S96j or Z96j, I think that the $80 difference is enough to get the higher resolution anyway

I have REALLY good vision and 15.4" wuxga was nice but the 17" is way more tolerable. In a matter of fact a 17" at WUXGA has about the same font size as a 15.4" at WSXGA visually... If you use 120dpi fonts, windows gui gets funky now and then but makes the WUXGA much more pallatable.

If youre a typical user (word processing, surfing, dvd, gaming) and you dont have the fastest state of the art video card, I would recommend WSXGA.

If you game hard and do other hardcore stuff (graphics design, 3D rendering, cad, etc.)WUXGA is the way to go.

I think it's WSXGA+. The title is just mistyped.

I've had WUXGA on a 17" notebook, and now have WSXGA on a 15.4" notebook. I adapted to both, but found the font size too small for day to day use (as suggested above, this is easily fixed by increasing text size and turning on clear type). For gaming, I have generally run at lower than native resolution with no issues (but do use WSXGA for games like Guild Wars).

So - all that said, my next notebook will be WXGA...I'm tired of squinting and really find I have few applications that benefit from the higher resolution. It really is personal preference. As long as you get a decent display, DVDs will look good at WXGA resolution as well.

Good Luck on your decision.
