Look at my Dell XPS M1705 - Page 2

HOW DID YOU DO IT!? Show us your secrets =)

PS: What's the part number for the back lid? Was it easy to swap or heavy mods needed?
check out the FS section Trav and look for the topic of toolman selling a touchpad and he put all the info there.

Thanks CrackatiCz! Got the part # and I guess it's less than $100 for the cover. Hmm, do the LED's on the back of the lid work at all or are the connectors for them something that only the real M1710 mobo's have?
Can you rep me? Also it only works on E1705's I believe and an M1710 no M170's, and yeah sadly enough the LEDs only work with the M1710 mobo.

Thanks for quoting me. Can I get some rep for the help?

rep for the both of yous

Now while I have you in this thread, honestly the back LCD cover and palmrest for $160 seems like a steal. Those cheesy quicksnap covers are $50 and you're still left with ugly white bumpers. This is MUCH more elegant. I am going to go for the red replacement as long as the part isn't much more expensive ..deffinatly excited about this mod.

My question to you is, did you need any special tools to install either items or were they just direct replacements that unscrewed and screwed in?

How about the silver keyboard? Is that also a direct replacement? I have no interest to mess around with the touchpad if you guys can't get the LED working on it, and it's really not too different otherwise.

As far as the back lid LED's .. can you get them power from somewhere off the board and have them sit on a single color or is it just going to have to stay unlit (not a big deal if the LED's don't work on the back lid).

This isn't exactly a mod since EVERYTHING was just take off the old and put on the new. All of the screws go back in the same place, just the LED's don't work and I wouldn't know where to start to get them to start. Honestly, I peeled off the LED pad that is underneith the XPS on top. The light from my LCD shines through and the XPS is white. It looks awesome as hell!

Take pictures of the Back Lid in the dark showing it shining through! That does sound neat! Anywho .. what about the keyboard, was that an exact drop in replacement too? Thanks for all your help. Ok, so it's not a fully custom job, it's just bolt-on aftermarket parts. Still it's gonna get twice the framerate with the new lid right!? Haha.

Yes, the keyboard is a drop in.

So you can buy a XPS lid and it will fit on a e1705 with all the same screws and stuff? Not moding nessisary?

I was thinking... you should get some thin red paper, maybe tissue paper or something, and it would probably have to be a dark red color to look red-red, not pink-red, and then put the paper inside, over the XPS, so that the white light filters through and makes a cool red effect.

Just a thought. This mod looks cool tho, I've been thinking of ways to make my E1705 look cooler but I think I would rather try buying a new set of the cover parts and painting them or something. I don't want an XPS wannabe, I want something original... But still, looks nice. Good job.

Kudos to you for using XPS parts on your E1705. I'm sure the amount spent on all the parts - well, you could have bought a XPS M1710 now.

In anycase, nice job.

I just called dell and gave them the part numbers and paid over the phone.

I still want to know how to light up the xps logos including the touchpad .

(One solid color would be fine)

Does anyone know which silver paint would be best if touch up would be needed ?

I just scratched the front cover during transport.

i am 99% sure the m1705 does not have a connection for the led lights, and tapping into something could fry your mobo, at least that was how it was with the 9300. but i am sure with enough research and some skill (and a good Fluke multimeter) you could do it. i myself wouldnt take the chance, but thats me. the led's are only nifty for a while, i just leave mine off anyways
