Below are photos of my M5500 which has a Pentium M 2.6 GHz and 2GB Ram. You can compare these photos with the M5550 core duo above. I dont think Alienware will be making an even newer case for the core 2 duo chips, they will probably just make it an option in the configuration of the M5550 (and other laptops) or maybe phase out the core duo.

I was thinking about changing my M5500 for a same spec M5550 machine just to have the new case and core duo, but decided mine is still pretty powerful! Also in the UK (havent checked USA) we dont hav ethe 1680x1050 option screen for the M5550, only the 1280x800 and 1920x1200 options, either of those dont really suit me. LOL

M5500 pics for comparison:

I really like the m5500. Back in June, before the new line of m5550 erupted, I was close to ordering that. But Alienware was changing prices like no other...everyday it seemed like. So, I looked into the Sentia, and then towards the end of July is when I actually ordered that Sentia...but later cancelled for the M5550.

Glad everyone enjoys the review.

Wow. The m5500 looks A LOT better then the m5550.

^ your really need to see the m5550 in person, at first i was mad when they introduced it because i was holding out for the m5500 so i had no choice, but its absolutely beautiful and now I dont think that I would trade it for anything. You just HAVE to see it, its soo cool textured and the screen is awesome, and hte case looks amazing with the saucer silver and grips and glowing head (without the text i didnt like at first, but hte alienhead alone is stunning). The m5500 is beautiful, but I wouldnt say better. They both are unique and striking in their own ways.

I think the m5550 looks good...but have to admit, the Xeno Gray m5500 is a great color too. It doesn't show any signs of wear, and is pretty rugged. I'd guess the m5550 might be more prone to scratching, but it's probably pretty tough too.

I dont think it would be very easy to scatch, it feels so smooth and like it has this thick gel coat over it. I think the only damage it could take would be the case cracking and even that looks difficult.

Subwoofer + Oblivion

I was just wonderin', since no one so far has talked about it that i have seen, is if there is really a subwoofer on this lappy? I'm curious because recently i heard Dell inspiron 6400 speakers that were violently tinny to my ears, and I was wondering if the subwoofer helps to create some low end even if its just at low to medium loudness?

P.S. has anyone played Oblivion on a m5550 with a go7600 yet? i'm curious how it performs. Also has anyone overclocked there go7600, if so how was the performance? (3D mark05)

Although I like the Xeno Gray color on the M5500, I would've probably went with the Saucer Silver anyways. Like Allastorm said, it has a think gel on it, and it would seem like it would sustain some light blows lol. I'm not showing any wear...I hope it stays that way for a while. But I am gentle when I open/close the screen...it's better to be overly cautious, than not enough.

Had AW offered the Conspiracy Blue, or Cyborg Green, I would've gotten one of those over the Saucer Silver. But either or, doesn't matter a whole lot to me. I think the Silver gives it more of a professional look...which I like.

And for PaulEWog
The M5550 does not have a subwoofer.

If you configure a M5550, I know they offer audio upgrades, but I just went with the 'stock' sound. And it sounds just fine for me. DVDs could be a little louder, but I don't watch movies on this laptop.

I haven't played oblivion...and I probably don't intend to. I did tho just install World of Warcraft, and it said that my CPU wasn't high enough. I intalled it anyways.

I haven't overclocked my gfx card, and I don't intend to lol...and I have the go7600

I like my warranty

wtf rly? it says it has a subwoofer, its probably just week =/

sno0kiez, have you tried running Battlefield 2 or F.E.A.R on your machine? How was the performance?

Sorry....

I didn't realize that that was a dumber question, but I should have thought that there wasn't one since no one had talked about it. However, I find this weird considering that on their website, when you go to the gallery, the m5550 has a subwoofer in the port diagrams.

I am hopefully planning on purchasing this laptop with a 2ghz core duo, 1gb ram and a go 7600, however I am going to have to convince my 'rents first...... got any tips? LOL it's gonna be toguh but I should be able to.

Hmm, I see this picture....

I honestly did not know that this laptop had a woofer. I have that little circle on the bottom of my laptop as well....wow...learn something new evertday. I guess the M5550 DOES have a subwoofer. But judging by me not knowing it, It must not be that loud.

and Hitman..I have not yet played BF2, nor F.E.A.R...sorry to dissapoint anyone, but, I'm not a fan of BF2...but I like F.E.A.R...we play it on my friends AW pc

I don't have the game, but maybe I could try a downloaded demo

I just bought HIDs for my car, so cash is tight lol

I think the sound on the M55** range has been pretty good and the M5550 should have slighlty better sound even so with the added subwoofer :-)

I just replaced my Intel 2200 with the Intel 2915 and installed the latest drivers and software, i love the new icon in the system tray which shows signal strength, i dont need to use the wifi signal strength widget anymore!

:-)

I've ran Paint Shop Pro - and it worked without any pauses. I also ran that program with my dvd burner running, downloading a few songs, and also haveing windows media player open and playing a song. The laptop seems to accept multi-tasking with ease.

I'm not sure if PSP is that processor intensive, but I was editing some pictures of my car. Everything went sm0oth!

Hey everyone. I know it's been a little bit of a while since I last posted but I've kinda been haveing some rough times in my life. Relationship problems...none with the AW, so you're good.

Anyways, a little update on the lappy. Everything seems to be working up to par and beyond. I did notice that when I was on myspace, the laptop just shut off without any warning, but it hasn't happened since. A real PITA if you're doing homework. If it happens again, i'll contact AW about it. Other than that...it works great. I'm about to upgrade the warranty on it, and maybe get anudder gig of ram. But yeah, all is go0d!!!!!
