XPS Gen 2 - Charging Module / Battery Charger - Not working, no warranty?

Thread Starter
Okay, I can solider under a microscope all day long (Air Force Electronics Tech), but I have no clue where to start to figure out where I can find a parks breakdown and guide to getting inside the XPS Gen 2 to replace whatever it is to fix the battery charing problem.

Battery replaced once, and swapped with others, still a no go.

Replaced the A/C Adapter as well, no go. (Rev 2 and 4 I think) and tried lower watt ones as well.

Help

Oh...it doesn't charge, and if I can't power it up without the battery in there (with a tiny charge)

If I have a battery that I charge from another computer, and put it in there, I can get it to boot up. The battery will go down to 1% while still plugged in, and if I take it off, I have to go and charge it in another computer again.

Try one thing first. Around the power connector on the motherboard should be a few big capacitors (I assume you know what they look like from your dayjob). On half the boards I had, the problem was not with the connector per say but the "big" parts that were getting a cold solder joint from the motherboard being flexed. Just reheat these joints and add a bit more solder if needed.

The only time this hasn't revived the motherboard is when the board was actually cracked. It's amazing the number of motherboards sold "for parts" on ebay that you can buy, solder for 2 minutes and resell 4x the price! I have gone through 5 or 6 C640 motherboards doing just this.

Hope that helps.

Wave soldering.... big components don't get enough heat.
