Intel Extreme Graphics stink :(

Ok, I know I didnt expcet much from this chipset and I didn't buy this machine for games but from what I've heard from a few of you I'd expect it to handle newish games ok.

To take a game for example: Need For Speed Underground

This game just will not run with any kind fo detail at even the lowest resolution.

I've installed Intels latest graphics drivers from their site and still no better. The manchine came with the demo of Quake 3 Arena and the ran fine at 1024x768 (I know this is now quite an old game)

I tried Unreal Tournament 2004 Demo and that runs *ok* but only at 800x600

Is there something I can do to improve things - the IEG is the only thing about this machine I don't like.

Assuming you don't have access to a linear accelerator or a cyclatron, a large heavy sledge hammer will do. Better is one of those big demolition tractors with a heavy duty hydraulic ram on it, something in the 2" diamter range. That'll fix it. If not, take it to a day care center and let the kids play with it. That''ll take care of it for sure.

The only "Newish" game that I have tried is Call of Duty which handles very well.

I'll try out the games you listed above when I get the chance and see for myself.

i am trying to find a comparison between the ATI and the intel graphics card.. i know ATI kicks intel a** anyday.. but i want to know how bad can it get... does anyone have any links?

u said u didnt get it for games so why are u complaining??

Cross ur fingers, booga thinks the intel gfx card is removable which gives hope to a swap to an ati or nvidia card ddown the road.
The card is not "integrated" as the specs would suggest.

Edit and cut out the rest of the rambling...

* Edit - exhaust heat increase when playing games with my sentia from the area where I *thought* the GPU was. I assumed this was a GPU for that reason. I guess the IEG is integrated.

Hitting myself with the stoopid stick for spreading misinformation...

ok... lets say, hypothetically you could swap the two.. how much would the ati card cost?

Couldn't tell you the price difference.

I found a side by side comparison of the AI and the Intel, but can't seem to find the link now. The ATI definitely beat out the Intel by a margin but the most notable results were that some games look for non shared video memory to operate (not the technical term)

Someone in this forum posted the link below of a list of games that work with the Intel, and a few with tweaks needed to work.

Booga, I hate to disapoint but if you read the manual that came with the motherboard what you are looking at in the picture is the CPU. i hope I'm wrong...

Also I'm not really complaining, I'm just wondering if I've got a bad setup or something

Wow Great link booga!!! that intel games page has lots of info u should add it to the sentia faq sticky!!!!

Alienware's R9600 upgrade is 190$ US according to Maximum PC, and Alienware tells me upgrades cost 180$-200$ US. So any upgrade for the Sentia will probably cost as much. But there are none offered.

Ummm...the Intel Extreme Graphics is built into the North Bridge...that's about as integrated as it gets. It's not even a separate chip. You will not be able to "swap" it per se. But I believe the 855GM chipset does supply an AGP connector. So if the case has enough space you can add a graphics card and disable Intel Extreme Graphics.

Yes, that image Booga posted didn't look discrete to me, but I didn't want to say anything.

Oh, and there's no way in hell you're going to find room inside a Sentia for a completely new GPU module with heatpipe, heatsink, and fan. Maybe you could mount it in a small box next to the laptop and plug it in every time you want to turn on the laptop
