There is an article in Maximum PC magazine June 2006 called Power-User’s Guide to Dual-Core that refers to that M$ article. I tried looking on Maximum PC's web site for the article but they don't have it archived. I guess you need to find the magazine issue in question to read it. Maybe Maximum PC can sell you the issue or article in question. It contains quite a bit of useful info about getting the most out of dual core procs (Intel or AMD). You need to call M$ to get the hotfix mentioned in the M$ article or if you can find a back issue of Maximum PC you can download the hotfix from AMDzone.com as outlined in the magazine article and install it. The Maximum PC article walks you through the Registry changes needed to apply the hotfix. My guess is that you call M$ the tech will walkyou through the process. Microsoft doesn't make the hotfix available except by calling them. Again my guess is that they want to make sure you really need it. Anyway I used the info in the Maximum PC article to obtain the hotfix from AMDzone.com and installed on my machine. I also did some of the other tweaks mentioned. Don't know if I increased performance by much but I didn't seem to hurt anything. Your mileage may vary however. Use this info at your own risk. There doesn't appear to be much literature about issues or tweaks to dual core procs as yet. Strange as these (Intel Core Duo's) are poised to replace Pentium 4 as the processors of choice for Intel's near future. They are already the proc of choice for Apple.

Thanks Psychotic_UK,
Already have this patch. It fixes battery issues with Core Duo processors and USB controller. That is not the one the original poster was refering to.
You still have to call MS on the phone and speak to a tech to get that one.
You have to call MS and talk to tech so they can make sure you really
need it. That is reason for the phone call, not to verify you don't have pirated copy of XP. Although any interaction with MS these days results
in them doubting your possessing a valid copy of XP until you prove otherwise.

Or go to AMDzone.com as stated in the MaximumPC article.

Thanks Guys

I havent had this laptop long enough to really comment that much on this issue, but I was just curious. After I get everything together on this thing I may look further into this and install this.I think we will probably see this in the next SP.

Probably or in a future auto update. I don't know if any of this stuff
helped any, didn't benchmark before and after. Of course I have a 5672
but the Core Duo is the same. I know that when I update in the near future
to the new Merom processor I will get a boost.

Thanks Darth

That's great, It sheds more light on this, Some of the things I'm asking of this 8204 may be helped by this. I only going to use it if I see problems.
