Dell takes a lot of heat because before 2003 or so they didn't build real gaming machines and used cheaper parts so they could sell a basic multimedia computer for a low price. Since then, the XPS line is about as high end as it gets, and has earned tons of respect from fans and from PC gaming type magazines, review sites, etc. The "NEW" Dell isn't the "OLD" Dell that people refer to.
In terms of their screens, they use samsung or LG, who make almost every laptop screen in any brand laptop, top of the line. If you've seen an ultrasharp 17 inch with tru-life like in person, you'll know what I mean.
Secondly, I have samsung RAM ( not value-ram or something) in my XPS, and I'm assuming theres even higher quality RAM in the XPS 700.
As for the motherboard, Dell recently began using the NVIDIA Nforce SLI chipsets in their XPS line, which is about as high quality as you can get. I'm not sure what they use in the laptops, but I would imagine even with a 1705 that you'd be getting something decent.
AW may use a better motherboard in the laptops, I'm not sure. RAM and screens are similar if not the same. It really depends on what you want. If you REALLY want an Alienware, and this is your chance to spend some cash, then get the AW. Nothing worse than getting your system and wishing you had the other one!!!
