D900T motherboard in UK?

Ok here's the deal. My 9860 is getting old and i was thinking that maybe i could change my motherboard and put in a 7900GTX or other video card that will be available the time i perform my upgrade. That'll probably last me almost another 2 years since most games are GPU bounded and i have a 3.6 P4 which isnt THAT slow..

I was wondering if anyone knows where i can buy a 9890/D900T motherboard in the UK? I looked around but couldnt find anything on the Internet. Or a US site that can ship to the UK. If the cost is too great (we get raped here in Europe...) maybe i'll send it to Sager in the US and have them do it.

Any other options to recommend? Maybe i should just wait it as long as i can (another year or so) and get a new system? I'm open to suggestions.

And while you at it if anyone knows HOW to change a D900T motherboard...

Thanks!

Clevo UK service center:
ADD: Unit 39, Rainbow lndustrial Estate,
Trout road, West Drayton, Middx,
UB7, 7RN UK

TEL: 44-1895-430333
FAX: 44-1895-438338

Whether or not they will sell you on is one thing... however they should be more than willing to install one for you. They should also warrant and support parts and labor at that rate.

To change the motherboard on the D900 is a pain,
you need to get everything out, front/back hard disks, LCD etc...

If you dont have experience dont even think about to do it.

A new D900T motherbaord costs about 260 GBP plus the shipping costs...

hahaha good luck to both of us then!

But i really have no idea how to change the motherboard. I'm experienced with desktops and changed my ram on my 9860 as well as added AS5 on the GPU and i open it from time to time to clean it thoroughly but i still havent figured out how to remove the motherboard.

Any help?

I have systematically gutted and repaired many laptops over the years, including my old 5600D down to the bare bones ... but not my D900T based Rock XTi yet ... it is still under warranty.

You will really have to do your homework on the changes from the 9860 to the 9890.
Basically there is no chassis standard for laptops ... even model revisions can have seemingly minor but effectively show stopping design changes for the budding enthusiast.

Another problem is that although a motherboard may be available, many machines have their builds split over several sub boards as well.
If any of these have been revised then that may also be a show stopper.
Then there's the BIOS, which is often bespoke to the exact machine.

Unfortunately, the main board in a notebook is generally only accessible by TOTALLY gutting the rest of the chassis.
A project like this makes changing a desktop motherboard seem like child's play ... I wouldn't advise even contemplating it without knowledge in handling microelectronics, a decent ESD safe environment, a steady hand and a lot of respect for the very expensive pile of bits you'll accumulate.

I am not saying that it can't be done, but the simple truth is that laptops are custom built PCs, crushed into a book sized case to no set build standards.

Short of asking an experienced D900T technician (there are very few), it is almost certain that no one could reliably answer your question. Potentially a very expensive question. Without a definite answer ... perhaps it would be advisable to save up for a new machine instead and live with the one you have for now.

I just noticed this while browsing:

http://www.notebookforums.com/thread168272.html

Sager are fitting 9890 mainboards to 9860s as replacement parts, so there is an enlightening start ... they do fit in the chassis without any alterations.

It would still be essential to try and find out if there are any parts issues or system incompatibilities that need to be sorted though.

So that just leaves the difficult bits - stumping up the cash and doing a total rebuild to fit one.

Best of luck, at 260 dabs plus some serious assembly work its not a task for the faint hearted!

260 GBP's? you guys forrget the GPU as well. Its more like 598GBP (1,134USD) with shipping...

Thanks for the advice, i'm fairly confident in my abilities but i'll still research more until i make a decision. Besides i'm not even in the UK at the moment, i'm back in Cyprus for the summer and will be going back in mid-September.

today i was contacted by alienware UK
they said i can create an account with them & ship the laptop to them & they will repair it for me but with £600 or more cost.

here is thier email
--------------
We can arrange to have the syetm brought back for repair but first we need to create an account for you. Therefore can you provide for me the following;
- Address
- Phone Number
- Email

Regarding the quote for an out of warranty depot you will be looking at a cost of around £500 to £600 pounds (including tax and shipping). Here is the breakdown of the costs;

*Parts and Two-way shipping – These are charged at the VAT rate of the country that the system is being shipped to e.g. UK 17.5%, Germany 16.5% etc.
*Diagnostics Fee - €100 or £70 charged at 13.5% VAT
*Labour - €20 or £15 per hour charged at 13.5% VAT

The normal procedure is to charge the shipping and diagnostics fee before we bring the system back and the rest is calculated after the system is repaired.

Also, for future reference we do deliver systems to Egypt.

If you need any further assistance please let us know.

omagian thats for the motherboard only? Or for the motherboard and a graphics card? If its for both then it comes out the same price as if we do it the DIY way but we can get it properly installed by authorized technicians.

Im sort of willing to pay that much because if you think about it its going to cost at least double that for a new system right?

I wonder if they can ship it to Cyprus... The VAT here is lower (15%) but shipping will cost more..

that is for just changing the motherboard only not for graphic card upgrade

Oh God that IS a lot then... Of course one could have the motherboard installed by them which is the hardest bit and then install the GPU himself. But that would still come out at around 850+GBP...
