Needed componets for video capturing and burning

Thread Starter
I have congfigured a notebook on Dell website. I am looking for a laptop to be used mainly for capturing through a tv tuner and burning downloads to DVD. Any suggestion as to what components will help make things run better are greatly appriciated. I am also checking to make sure that I am not over paying in certian areas that i will not be using. I will not be gaming on this computer, i am mainly interested in surfing, downloading, and ripping/encoding/burning video filee, and possible video editing.

Here are my main components:
Inspiron E1705
17 inch UltraSharp™ Wide Screen UXGA Display with TrueLife
Intel® Core™ Duo Proc T2500 (2GHz/667MHz/2 X 1MB L2 Cache)
Genuine Windows® XP Media Center Edition 2005
2GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz
256MB ATI MOBILITY™ RADEON® X1400 HyperMemory
100GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
TV Tuner w/ Remote Control

A few other questions i have are:
Should I wait and add on certian components after purchace so that i am afforded more options, such as the TV tuner (dell captures analog only) and the DVD burner

Thanks cor any help and advice

I'd buy the 2GB RAM outside. It'll definitely be cheaper and probably be better. If you want a better TV tuner, obviously buy that outside as well (esp. if you want digital recording capabilities).

The DVD+/-RW that came with my e1705 seems to work just fine. However, I haven't tried burning dual-layer DVDs yet (waiting for the disk price to come down).

I suggest the nVidia 7900GS, since it has dedicated VRAM and won't usurp part of your system memory. It won't really help with ripping/encoding/burning, but will probably help with video editing. Other than that, your configuration looks good.

i say go 7900 as well...wont help with your specific task but overall will make the system feel faster. i would consider investing into a haplague tv tuner.

Well, it looks ok, even overkill for SD (standard definition). You are pretty much fine with something like 512 MB / 1 GB RAM for SD. HD (High Definition) editing is much more demanding though, but I don't think you need to consider it yet.

You'll need a basic graphics card, so X1400 is ok. It's fine for playback. 7900 GS is overkill, except for HD, but I don't think you'll need it either, since you can't burn HD to DVD.

A fast processor is always a good thing. 17" WUXGA is great for video editing - a lot of work space. For HD (1080i and 1080p), it's great as well, since you can view the videos in full size on your screen.

You'll probably want an external hard drive at some point to increase your hard drive space.
