Wireless stopped working

I have an Acer Aspire 5021WLMi on which, the wireless has stopped working. The button on the front will not light up and the taskbar icon says wireless network unavailable. All looks OK and enabled in System Manager and I've tried uninstalling and re-installing the Broadcom adapter, with no result.

Can anyone please help?

Maybe the WLAN-Chip is broken...

That sounds fairly major - is it?

I don´t know...It can be! I wrote "maybe"...
Did you find any WLAN-Networks, or only you can not connect?

In the back of your Acer is an access to the MINI PCI WLAN card. The card might be defective, unseat. It's very easy to remove it and reseat or replace it with another card. The antenna might be loose.

Unless your problem is related to the motherboard, it will be easily fixed.

Husky,

I've had a look at the back but can't see where/what you are referring to. Can you give a bit more detail please?

Actually, I've now found it. I removed the card then replaced it - hasn't done any good. A colleague has a very similar model to mine, would it be worth trying a swap of cards tomorrow, to establish if that's the problem?

Hi baggy, I'd definitely try swapping the cards, and if your wireless starts working it's probably a bad card. You could also try putting your card in the colleague's computer and see if it works there for a double-check.

Hi wildiris, thanks, will certainly try that tomorrow. If the card is dud are they expensive to replace? The label underneath the PC says BCM94318MPG, do I try to replace it with exactly the same or is there now an updated version?

No, you can use a different model. You could also use a pc card if you want.

I'm not sure about prices, I don't think they're too bad and eBay is a good resource if you're worried about that. Maybe the other folks here can give you some model recommendations and you can look those up - IF the card is really the problem. Good luck!

Well folks, it isn't the LAN card. I swapped with my colleague and my card works in theirs but theirs doesn't work in mine, so that seems to rule that one out!

Any more ideas please??

Reinstall the driver...

Do you swapped LAN- or WLAN-Card? You write LAN-Card!

Hi stronzo,

I've tried reinstalling the driver but it told me that it wasn't any more up to date than the one already installed. I swapped the Broadcom WLAN card.

Puh difficult! Sorry at this time I´ve no idea...

I must think it over....
Experts, please help, but if there's a problem with the WLAN hardware interface might a PC slot card still work? If so, there might be a way to narrow down where the problem lies and if it's hardware at all. I'm afraid I'm totally ignorant of the components and pathways involved in these two methods so maybe someone can confirm whether trying this might be informative for baggy?

@wildiris: You must try it, if a PCMCIA-WLAN-Card is working! Don´t know how to you...

Sorry I forgot the word "help" I mean " I don´t know how to help you"

He asked if he can use an PC-Slot-WLAN-Card (I think he mean PCMCIA-Slot)...so I said that he should try it!
