WTF? M1210 has 5.1 sound, but e1705/M1710 not?!?

Looking at the online manual for the M1210:

http://support.euro.dell.com/support...m/PF362A02.pdf

Page 68...

There's a description of how to connect a 5.1 speaker system to the M1210 by analog cables.

My M1710 does not have that capability. Both have S/PDIF, but only the little sister of the M1710 has analog 5.1? That sooo wierd.

Or is this fake? Only "virtual" surround. Does the card have 8 channels or only 2?

BTW, I chose the 17" forum as I want to talk about when it might come to the 17" models...

"It will be like virtual surround since its card is only stereo "

The M1210 is packed with features...it is a newer system than the M1710 with features that will probably be available on the next 17" notebook that Dell makes. That wireless "sniffer" feature on the M1210 rocks.

It appears that the m1210 has the sigmatel 9220, which is an 8-channel audio codec. Our laptops have the 9200, which is only a 2-channel codec :[

Yeah, that would be the implication... but I can't seem to find any info about it... the www.dell.com tech specs mention stereo codec... and the name 9220 is nowhere to be found.

The power and space requirements for the 9220 are higher, so I still find this a bit strange.

It's in the driver ini file. It says something like codec=9220 for the M1210 and codec=9200 for the e1705

Ah-hah! that's at last something concrete pointing in the 9220 direction...

So us e1705 user could we just download the codec to get 5.1 or is this some sort of hardware issue.

Codec here is referring to the actual chip, not a piece of software. It appears that the m1210 simply has a superior audio chip.
