Ubuntu on i9300

post #1 of 5
Thread Starter
Well, I've got it all installed and running, I am however having a few problems getting some of my other hardware installed. I am a complete linux noob and I am even having trouble understanding some of these guides.

Could someone help me get my Wireless and BT working so I Don't have to switch between Linux and XP to DL things for linux.

Also, How can I get my 6800 to work?

Lastly, how can I play Mp3s?

All help is appreciated,
Thanks.

You should make sure you have the latest Ubuntu, which is some cases can cure problems you may have with the OS detecting and correctly installing the drivers for your hardware. If you've done that, then you can always manually install the latest drivers for your WiFi, which I think is the Intel Pro Wireless 2200, or ipw2200. Just follow the instructions here;

http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Install_ipw2200

Bluetooth depends on getting the right driver installed. Depending on your Ubuntu version, the bluez drivers may already be installed, and be the correct one for your HW. If using bluetooth is what you need, check out installing the Gnome bluetooth utilities, at;

http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/GnomeBlueTooth

to see if you need to have anything there installed. In terms of installing the latest nVidia driver for your 6800 you can follow this guide;

http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Install_Nvidia_driver

and you should be set.

There are a lot of great MP3 players and utilities for Linux. You probably already have something installed that can play mp3s, which is called Rhythmbox. Don't forget to read up at;

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

and remember to add mp3 support to Ubuntu, you need to;

Install the package gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly

I use a newer program called Listen, but feel free to experiment, (it's one of the best things about the Linux experience). Someone posting to the Ubuntu forums has started a new mp3 player called Exaile, which sounds pretty neat. Homepage is;

http://www.exaile.org/

Check out the long Ubuntu forum thread on Exaile at;

Good Luck..

jasn you're making things way too hard. 1. update your system to the latest version
Code:
sudo apt-get get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
2. go to www.getautomatix.com and download the appropriate version. Double click on it to install. 3. run automatix...it will install for you some software as you choose, all the required media codecs that you'll need, and nvidia drivers whats your wireless card? i can't help you with BT since i never had to set it up...but has something to do with bluezutils

jasn was corret, wireless card is IPW 2915 A/B/G card in my i9300.

To be honest, BT wasn't a neccesity just an early creature comfort to make the rest of the customization easy (my handheld mouse is only BT).

But however, I do need Video and Wireless. Thanks for the help so far, i'll check it out.

oh...make sure u restart your computer after automatix is done.
I think i didnt, and that kinda crapped out the drivers for the video card.
