Sharp 15.4 WUXGA leakage

or brightness or bright bars or light bars or whatever you call them, mine has em on the top of the screen and the bottom. I called Tech support today and the guy asked me to make sure they were still there in the BIOS screen. Kinda hard to tell as the BIOS screen has a bright teal border on top and bottom. Anyway after making sure the LCD connector was firmly plugged in he said the screen needed replacing adn I needed to send it in. I told him I felt competent enough to do it myself and he said this may void my warranty. I tell him I have read of several others doing it, and he said "Oh, it's an Inspiron 8600 ... yes that is a consumer replacable part" or something to that affect. I now have a new Sharp screen (was told the same thing as another user about getting a Samsung, can only replace like for like) on the way and if it does the same thing we will do this about 50 more times until I get one that works to my liking! I'll keep you all updated.

I have the sharp screen and have none of the light problems and no dead picsels so there are good ones out there.

Thanks for the info guys. I assumed the Samsung screen was superior from reading these forums. Guess I should read my own tagline ...

Where on the Dell site can you get your system details, LCD manufacturer and such? I got to it once but cannot seem to pull it up again. I am thinking it was in the Premier support section, but now I get a message saying my access to that may have been revoked.

so to be clear, u have no noticable light at bottom on black background?

good news, since my machine is at tech now.

anyways, anyone know if i can see status etc. of the repair over the net?

seems they go out of they length to hide phone numbers.

and also the two calls i got from england, the number didnt show up on my phone.

I am amazed that the Sharp screen is brighter than the Samsung. I am using a WUXGA Samsung right now and always end up lowering the brightness a couple of clicks when using it.

If the Sharp is that much brighter is must be blinding

Yeah its really strange on the samsung model lines the WXGA and WSXGA screens are brighter than the WUXGA screen theres got to be a reasonable explanation but i just dont see it. I didnt believe it till i actually compared both side by side

Well I got my new LCD on March 2 (after the initial call on 2/28, very speedy shipping), installed it (SUPER easy to do) and the illumination problem on the new one is worse than the first. Putting in a call to Tech support and trying for another one.

BTW, they sent a refurb samsung. My original was a Sharp ... so much for the 'like for like' policy. No dead pixels on either screen, but this leakage is just unacceptable.

Gonna see if I can get some good comparison pictures posted ... I may have to read a tutorial or something.

Yes, please post more pics...this 'problem' is happening so often, it makes me wonder if the 'light-leaking' is just the natural state of those screens...?

Let's see if this works ... Here's a picture of the original:

And here's the replacememt received on 03/02/04, substantially worse along the bottom edge:

I took these in a dark room to show it to full effect, the light is only on the bottom, one of the pictures looks like there is some sort of brightness in the middle of the screen that is not there in reality.

It is not real noticeable when using windows, but when watching a DVD or playing Warcraft III between scenes it is very noticeable and does get worse the longer the lappy is on.

did you ever have problems with horizontal rain? cause when i initially got the laptop i didn't have this problem, but after i got the horizontal rain problem it looks like my lcd is starting to have to problem
