Yup, it can take 4GB if you have 2 x 2GB modules.

I thought only XPS 1710 can take 4GB ram, not the inspiron E1705.... interesting... I need more memory

Given that the chipsets (both north and south) are the same in both, they both have the same capability - so yeah, no problem with 4GB.

Yup if you look at page 138 of the owners manual, you will see that there are 2 connectors. And the memory modules supported is 2GB max per connector. However, 2GB memory modules are really expensive and not commonly available, so 4GB RAM upgrade will have to wait a year or 2 when vista gains more traction.

just buy a second 1705 or a low end 1710
it's cheaper than the 4 gb's and it'll actually serve a purpose...

lol, well the XPS M1210, XPS 2010, Precision M90, Precision M65, Latitude D820, Latitude D620, and Latitude D520 all can have up to 4GB of ram. Wouldn't be surprised if there were a few more.

cheaper to buy another laptop!

Crucial have their 4GB kit priced (for the XPS) at not so reasonable €2600 inc. VAT !!

I think we'll wait a year or two until Vista with 1GB has become the minimum and 2GB is the norm...

and let's face it, by then many of us will be wanting to replace our 2 or 3 year old 1705's anyway...

for me, I'll upgrade to 2GB next year, and replace in a couple of years (that's what Premium CompleteCare is for right?)

You only upgrade the memory when you needed it. If you are just playing games and surf the web, don't bother.

But I guess the real advantage of high memory only happen when windows are running at 64bits and multi processors... Of course we still need the appt to utilitize that.
