making bkup of osx discs, odd questions!

ok so here's the deal.

i have the basic macbook without a dvd burner in it.

can i just make a copy using my windows box, with something like winISO or nero? will that work?

i went into osx today, and created a .dmg file of each disc (both need a dual layer dvd for space btw). im wondering if nero (for windows) can use a .dmg image file to burn an image to dvd in windows.

if anything, ill just trash the .dmg file and do a copy?

Not sure if you can burn a bootable .dmg file on a windows machine. There may or may not be a program out there to do that for you. But, not sure you can make a copy either. Does windows recognize the disc when you put in OS X? If so then I couldn't see why it wouldn't work.

havent even inserted it in a windows box yet.

i dont have the DL dvd's right now, probably wont do it either, they are a lot of money.

Yes, you should be able to make a full copy of the disk with Nero. Windows won't be able to open the disk but Nero will see that there is a data disk there and will allow it to be copied.

Depending on the DMG file you can just change the DMG to ISO and it will burn fine, but this doesn't work with all DMG files.

so basically just use nero in windows, and test it in my mac?

simple enough, now to fork over the 2$/dvd

u can use the disk utility to save as a .cdr which u can then just change the extension in windows to .iso and burn. DMGs are typically compressed so u can't just change the extension to ISO and expect it to work.

also, i'm hoping the newer intel macs have better DL recognition. in trying to make a backup of iLife '06, i couldn't get a working copy that my iBook could mount w/ a DL burn (as it was ~6GB).

the .dmg i created with disc utility are read only, with -0- compression.

ill have to just wait and see until i get the DL discs. they are still pricey for me. not that 20$ is a lot for 10-15 of them, but still

I dont have my mac yet so i have a dumb question. Does the OS have built in dmg or iso creation? Im planning on getting the base model which has no burner so i want to know if i can just create iso's and then burn them on my pc.

yes, using the disc utility. u can save as dmg or cdr. i haven't tried changing the extension of dmg to iso but cdr converts w/o issue. i'm guessing the dmg>iso would work so long as the dmg doesn't have any compression. but, chevy will be our guinea pig i guess!
