Willing to join the club ... just need to find the lappy

So I've just decided to get a new laptop this weekend since I've been using a Toshiba Statellite Pro 6000 that my lab has provided me with for my research...since I will have to return it back next month ...
Even if I have a good desktop at home I have noticed that I won't be able to live whithout a laptop ...
During my research for a laptop I came with the decision to go with an m6805 or an m505x ... but more an m505x...
my questions are:
- What's the best price I can get any of these for? Is there a way to get any rebates or coupons?
- I am fom Montreal, so as a canadian buyer, what's the best place to get it from?
- from what I understood, these lappies are kind of sold out? would it be better to wait a bit or to order one right now?

thank you guys

anybody? ... even if I am in canada I am willing to buy from the US since it seems to be cheaper and they're no duties...
I heard that some of you got them for something like 1300$..could I know what was the deal?

Are you a AAA member? You should be able to get a 10% discount ont the 505x through Gateway. That should bring the price down to about $1349 USD.

I was able to get the M6805 from Best Buy for $1299 USD after $250 in rebates. They also have a rewards program. If you purchase a rewards card before getting the laptop you also get over $50 dollars in gift certificates to Best Buy. The rebates come and go so it is a matter of timing them right. Circuit City is now doing 2 $100 rebates but you have to order on-line to get the circuit city one. The other is an Emachines rebate.

Unfortunately, most stores are sold out of the Emachines. But one thing that I found is that you cannot always believe the online inventory status. My local Besy Buy said they were sold out when I checked the status online. The next day I went in to look at their display model again and what do I see? Sitting on the shelf, behind "the cage" one Emachines box with that lovely Mobile Athlon 64 sticker on the side. It was a sign that 6805 was meant to be mine...

I wish you well on the search. Either notebook will more than likely serve you well. Both are quality machines.

DeusExMachina, do you think that I should wait till the stores get some stock of emachines and gateways to get better deals or rebates ... since I still have a whole month in front of me ...
about the AAA stuff, in canada we have CAA but I don't know if it would be ok for the rebates... otherwise, could I provide an AAA number of any other member and get the rebate?

You might give Gateway a call. If they have discounts for AAA they may have something similar for Canadian customers.

The Emachines and Gateway have struck a chord with customers. Good quality, excellent performance, at a great price. I think that is the reason that both seem to be in short supply. Neither company accurately guessed just how popular their respective computers would be. They didn't have enough in stock to meet the demand.

Considering the popularity of the 6805 and M505 you may see if any of the stores have a waiting list so you can be assured of one when they come in. The emachines rebate goes until 5/29 so it's just a matter of catching the additional store rebate through Circuit City or Best Buy (they seem to have them quite often). I'm not sure of the Gateway rebate schedule. Office Depot, if you have one in your area, also carries the M505x and also does some nice rebates.

Hope this helps. Don't give up. Check around. Many of the online real-time inventory pages aren't accurate. My local Best Buy had the 6805 in stock even though the web site said they were sold out.

Zoom sorry to tell ya but the 505x is only available through www.gateway.com/ca (gateway canada) and they bump up the price and charge you tax.

The way I got my computer was that I ordered it to my aunt's house in California and then my mom went to visit her to pick it up when she was down there. I got the AAA discount because I told the rep that I lived in California and was ordering to "my" house. I'm not a member of AAA but i decided to give it a shot and told him I knew about the discount and he gave it to me!

Anyways if you have relatives in the states then try it that way.. otherwise you're going to have to pay duty/taxes on your computer and that'll raise the price $200-400 unfortunatley.
