Just ordered my 8000t

Thanks to everyone who has posted on this board. It's a great resource for information. I just bit the bullet and ordered the HP 2.0ghz Duo 8000t, 1 gig of ram, 100 gig HD, Nvidia 256 7600 (or 7400).

I did months of spec comparisons, Consumer Report reading etc, and at the finish line it was the Sony Vaio and the HP. When I built the Dell with the same specs, it was 500 dollars more. I came really close to getting the Sony 690, but it only came with a 128 meg of ram on the video card. So since I need a good media player as well as a NLE for my video business, the video card was a bit of sticking point.

So I should get my laptop the first of next week. I build my own desktops, but this will be my first laptop for myself. I'll take any pointers, I heard it comes with bloatware. Hehe.

If you're only going to save $10 you might want to do it in one transaction to keep things simple. From what I was told by and HP rep (which could or could not be correct) is that the EW could be bought after the sale, anytime while the unit was under the 1 yr warranty. I had ordered a unit thru Costco.com and at the same NO addtitional warranty options were showing on the Costco.com order page. (I contacted the executive offices, I see they took my advice and have added it ) Costco gives you a180 day return period , instead of only 21-days if ordered direct thru HP so consider how much that is worth to you: http://www.costco.com/CTO/HPLanding....opnav=&browse= PS: Where are you finding this $250 off coupon you talk about? and more importantly how does the final price compare with the above vendor?

I think I read in the fine print on my order that you can buy the extended warrantee later.

This price of my ordered dv8000t is way below any price i could have gotten thru Costco because of the $250 off coupon "nb5252" (http://www.xpbargains.com/st_deals.php/HP_coupons.htm)
I went ahead and ordered the 3 yr express warranty for $175 with the APP discount(187 after taxes vs. 197 without the discount). I spec'd mine out with:
FREE Upgrade to Genuine Windows XP Media Center
- Intel(R) Core(TM) Duo processor T2250 (1.73 GHz)
- 17.0" WSXGA+ BrightView Widescreen (1680x1050)
- 256MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7600
- 1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x512MB)
- 80 GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
- FREE Upgrade - LightScribe DVD+/-RW w/Double Layer
- Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network w/Bluetooth
- No TV Tuner w/remote control
- 8 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
- Microsoft(R) Works/Money
- Genuine Windows XP Media Center Edition Backup CD
- HP Mobile Remote Control
My total is $1278 shipped after taxes, factor in the warranty and the $50 rebate and im at about $1400 which is AWESOME! The hp salesman on the phone assured me i should have no problem with the warranty and was actually suprised when he heard about the $250 code. Note: The $250 coupon cannot be used over the phone, it only applies to online orders.

Thanks for posting the coupon link, sure if will help someone

The unit I got from Costco I spec'd out the EXACT same as the below except with the 2.0 gig CPU, and a 100 gig 5,400... it being $1,351 shipped.

I don't understand this 250 coupon. I checked out that link, which invokes the APP site. However, the dv8000t price there is only $79 less than at hpshopping.com. I configured a machine into my cart, but never saw this 250 discount, nor a place to enter the code.
Well, now I see...have to get to the part where you actually place the order...
you cannot use the coupon when your in the app site, log out of the app site and configure the system from the regular hp site to use the coupon
post #11 of 23
I configured a dv8000t on hpshopping.com, got to the coupon input box, submitted the code, and the site replied something like, "This coupon may not be applied to the configuration." So I gave up. Besides, there was a FAQ that explained that you can indeed use the coupon with phone-in orders.

Anyway, now I'm thinking of a Dell M90. They're throwing in a free 19" flat panel digital monitor.
hmm thats wierd, the only thing that would explain the coupon not working if your doing everything else right is that its reached its use limit already. The guy over at hp tried to use the coupon on the phone, and then after being put on hold came back and told me that its online only. Any hoot, happy hunting, but the m90 is in a totally different price range isnt it?
The M90 competes with the HP nw9440, a mobile "workstation". Both configs are around 3K, but the Dell throws in a 19" flat digital monitor. Ends tomorrow . I'm just wrapped around the axle again with all the choices.

What to do with leftover $1300?

Well, hmmm... this M90 is 1300 bucks over the price of the dv8000t config.
Certainly not the same type of machine.
But if I bought the dv8000t, I could use the leftover 1300 bucks for a Sybian sex machine to lure curious wimmens to my bachelor pad. Hmmm...

Yep, when comparing machines you have to compare the pricing. Wouldn't be fair to compare the dv8000t, Dell M90, or the HP nw9440 to this machine: Aurora_m9700 http://www.alienware.com/product_det...e=3023#pdp-nav Dual Graphics Cards 256MB Nvidia GeForce Go 7900 GS SLI ENABLED Dual GPU's, Dual 7900GS's for only $1,999 http://www.alienware.com/configurato...de=SKU-DEFAULT PS: Also has a Tilting 1.3 Megapixel Camera standard like the HP dv9000 And: Plug in two additional displays with the m9700’s DVI-D and VGA outputs so you can pull up your favorite cheats page on one display and check the news on your guild Web site on another, all while strafing though enemy fire in full-screen mode. Special Ops Team With all its media capabilities, the m9700 also has S-Video In and Out. You can now easily capture video and send it to anyone on your team who has the required clearance. Tune In Because it is impossible to pull your eyes away from the stunning 17” widescreen display, we have installed a TV tuner so you will not miss finding out who will be the next person to be booted out of the singing contest. It’s ok, we know you watch… PLUS: Has a FULL size keyboard with numeric keypad, and you can "Quickly turn the touchpad on or off to meet your needs at that moment."

Furry, check out http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/08/..._have_arrived/

There's also a link which tests the Duo cores there as well.

"second choice, if at all".....i think that sums it up
post #19 of 23
Well the Core Duo is better at number crunching, but the Turion 64 X2 is better at graphics and video processing. Because of this, you might actually be better off getting the Turion for gaming or a multimedia machine. It all depends on your usage.

Graphics is all about number crunching: transforms, geometry, linear algebra, matrices, collision detection, clipping, windowing, etc. That's why video subsystems have a dedicated processor.

I'm no processor expert, but I'd be surprised to learn that either the Duo or the Turion had an on-board dedicated graphics engine.

Do they?
