Help fine-tuning the specs for a T60, please?

Hi. I'm about to buy a T60. As a student, some discounts are available, but only on certain configurations. Therefore, I'm wondering how much value I should place on certain specs. What matters most to me with this computer is longevity -- I'm not going to be doing much gaming or compiling or anything massive, but I'd like it to be a bit future-proof.

For graphics, how much difference will there be between an ATI x1300 with 64mb ram and an x1400 with 128mb ram? I'm not going to be doing much gaming (maybe a little) but I'd rather not be cursing at an aging piece of techno-junk in twelve or eighteen months' time.

For the processor (all core duos), what difference will I see between 1.83ghz, 2.0ghz, or 2.16ghz? (Please consider that I'm going to have 1.5gb of memory.)

Lastly, are 9-cell batteries physically bigger than 6-cells? If they're a little heavier, that's fine, but if they'll take up more space in my backpack, then I'm not sure if I'd want it...

Thanks for your help, everyone.

No reason to get the x1400 card. The x1300 will handle your requirements.

The 1.8Ghz is enough, but if you can get the 2.0 for a little more, why not? It all depends on price jump. I would suggest getting either 1Gb or 2Gb (2x1Gb)rather than 1.5Gb.

The 9 cell sticks out another 1/2 inch and adds about 6 ozs to the weight. The extra battery life is well worth the weight, imo.

Thanks for your help. From what you said, I have one more question:

Would there be a performance deficiency from 1.5gb, or something like that? The laptop comes with 512mb, and I figured that I could get an inexpensive 1gb stick from Newegg or somesuch place and just add it on. Aside from being a little cheaper, would it be better if I just got a second 512mb stick instead?

Since it comes with 512, then that makes sense. You most likely wouldn't notice any performance improvement from the extra 512, but there would be a margin one.

Two points. First, the more powerful video card will be of assistance if you plan on upgrading to Windows Vista since it uses a newer interface that needs more graphic muscle. Both of those cards are hypermemory, so you will notice a difference by increasing the RAM.

Similar thoughts on the processor. For basic educational tasks any of those CPU's will be more than sufficient. That being said the more powerful may be of some benefit in terms of "future-proofing."
