Ibm T60 + R60 Choices to be made.

I am buying a laptop for University use (word processing, spreadsheets, some videos, some pictures). (All the laptops below are 15 inch.
I have got some very competitive prices from dealers and I am wonderin how much is it worth paying for the difference in spec.
I have been drawn to Lenovo / IBM and have narrowed the choice down.

I have the choice of :

Lenovo R60 1.6ghz 512 60gb ATI Card + Ext Carry in WtY
= GBP £890

Lenovo R60 1.8ghz, 512mb 80gb ATI Card + Ext Carry in Wty
= GBP £990

Lenovo T60 (1951 ) 1.6 , 512 80gb Intel Graphics card 3 yr onsite wty included
= GBP £1050

Am I going to feel the difference in speed and usability ?
Should I save my money and go for the cheapest one and upgrade the memory - 1 or 2 gb?

Portability is not important particularly, neither is battery life.

I would really appreciate any help I can get.

For what you describe as your needs you would be fine with the least expensive. If portability is of little importance than the increased weight of the R60 shouldn't be any kind of problem and upgrading the memory is always a good idea. However, you shouldn't need more than a gig for what you're describing. More is never a problem, but may not be necessary.

Hope that helps, good luck with your decision and University.

Thanks for the help....

I had kind of thought that perhaps the extra processing power might be wasted.
I welcome anyone elses thoughts or affirmations.

You're welcome. The extra processing power is somewhat offset by the integrated graphics in the T60. But again, for the needs you describe you don't need it. Opening a word document .02 seconds faster isn't going to make or break you will it?

I think all 3 would be more than sufficient for you, so it's just up to your preference. I'd upgrade the memory to 1gb just for safe measure.

If you think you might be carrying it around much, I'd go for the t60. But if you won't, the r60 should be good.

I missed something out!

I notices the screen resolution is better in one r60 than the other (does this make any difference to a notebook newbie?)
You mean it is a higher resolution screen? The difference is that it gives you more space on the screen so you will be able to see more of a document at once. I personally prefer a higher resoluion screen to a lower res one, but it is very much a matter of personal preference and eyesight. If you can, you should look at examples of each and see which is more comfortable for you.

is this a 14" or 15"? If it's a 15", you need to find out if it's a flexview/IPS screen. The flexview screens are much better than regular screens, so you should get it if you can. If none of them are flexview, I generally prefer SXGA to xga or uxga. It's preference though.
