Dell Design Failures M1710

Hey guys,

a friend of mine has ordered a brandnew XPS M1710, after being excited and impressed by this system, he took a closer look at the notebook and found some really big failures:

1. Between the keyboard and the case there is a hole (!), yeah you read right a hole...

2. In (!) the display there is a brush...

3. The notebook wiggles on even desks, so that he thinks one of the notebooks feets is wether to short or to long

and now here are the answers of the Dell support:

1. We are afraid we can't arrange a replacement of the keyboard, cause it's a design property.

(So every XPS M1710 has the same failure ... mine hasn't ... what about yours?)

2. We'll arrange a replacement, we'll ship a display to you. The UPS service will make an apointment with you to send back the other display.

(Do I get it right ... they want that he should replace the display on his own ... wtf?)

3. We'll send you a package with new feets.

(That's alright I think)

So now I want to know from you if you have the same problems like I described in 1. and how my friend should behave...

Sorry for my bad English ....

I think it's really annoying he paid 2.500 € and if I pay such a big amount I want perfection!!!

Also in this hole liquid things can get in very easy...

This is why I purchased a Complete Care warranty...if I spill something into that hole, I will get a new computer. That just means that there will be more damage.

I think failure is the wrong term. Still a great machine...

Maybe it's a vent for more air to enter the system...

guys they can't be serious to sell such a crap...

We paid a lot of money and they say design issue....a little child makes such mistakes but not a corporation that claims to be the best!!!

Wow...maybe you should go to the dark side. You could buy an Asus MacBook Pro!

I don't really think you can call it a design flaw, if its part of the design it isn't a flaw. An imperfection you perceive but if thats how it comes from the factory and from the engineers then it isn't a flaw. A flaw would cause the system to not work as advertised/expected.

Send it back if you are so un happy with it. I love mine.

My gen 2 has the same hole? nay problem laddie!
Dude, I got news for you. There are much bigger holes on each side of the keyboard, right above the fans. Liquid can get in there as well if you want to be picky. My M90 has the same "design flaw" as you call it, but I hadn't even noticed it until I saw your post. Not something I'd write home about but to each their own.

My E1705 has the same hole. I'm sure it serves it's purpose for one reason or another... doesn't bother me too much, just glad to own such a good lappy . lol

Ehhhmmm don't get me wrong it's a great machine ... but this big failure in my opinion ... I wouldn't like to buy a new car that has scratches either .. and don't forget it's not my notebook but the notebook of my friend ... it seems to me some guys don't know the value of money ... I mean 2.5k € is no little fishes

ok I see nobody seems to matter if they got screwed...please close topic.

But first I want to know why...

dumbest post ever.
because its just a hole, maybe dell put it there with a reason. it doesnt bother me anyways and i have had a xps gen 2 and now a xps m1710. love them both.

It's a hole that you can't see, it has no meaning at all. Now the screen and uneven problem you need to get fixed but thats it. Let the hole rest in piece.
