Dell Design Failures M1710 - Page 2

Your "hair problem" is fixable by calling Dell, but design failure wise, it's not like your finger/body parts will fall in to the hole and cause serious injuries. I don't know what the policy is in Germany, but in the US, you can return the lappy w/in 2x days if you really don't like it.

As I said Dell will fix the Prob with the display and the feets...

But you say my post is dumb...then you should reread yours

"it's not like your finger/body parts will fall in to the hole and cause serious injuries"

In Germany we have return within 14 days...but the point is my friend likes the notebook but he just doesn't want to have a hole where no hole should be ... and also Dell admitted that it is a design issue!!!
They said it was a design issue because it comes on every m1710, so its not a defect and was ment to be that way.

The m1710s build quality is crap, its on par with the 9200, 9300, m170, and the 9400 from going from an ASUS Z71V to a DELL 9300 to an XPS M1710 i can tell you while Dell has the better graphics card their systems are so poorly designed now its incredible. The ASUS i had the Z71V was such a tight system it was actually portable. You see these two paper thin peices for the Dell the Palm rest is thin and the base peice is very thin with some structure support here and there but not much...this really isnt a portable laptop. My old ASUS i still have i was going to sell it, it has a 6600GT which actually was as fast as the 9300's 6800. I find myself bringing that thing on trips and using the m1710 as a regular computer.

Just my 2 cents... one little hole is definetly to be expected.. and also its obvious to most but just mentioning it the XPS M1710 is the same build as their 9400 no difference except a better graphics card, different color, pretty lights and maybe tighter hinges so the LCD doesnt pivot as much is the only thing i really noticed.

Dell builds up the important stuff like system specs and goes as cheap as they can where they think it wont matter sweeping all those problems under the carpet but i bet their average system life has decreased a huge amount. I held my old Inspiron 1000 the other day, i sold it to a friend that laptop is such a tighter build then my dell now, that old 1000 was as tight my ASUS. What happened Dell is Compaq now with a bigger focus on 3d power. Dell really has gone down the tubes with building a good laptop, and before you say they buld a great one go out and test the other guys they have come a long way, the latest HP i looked at looked better then my dell...not strong enough 3d power thats the Dell Edge they have.

No doubt the quality is down, but you should've gotten M90 if you really wanted a sturdier system.

I could not disagree more. The 1705/1710/9400 absolutely blow the 1000 build quality away. The 1000 was a squeaky, rattly peice of cheap plastic. These new systems have a very solid mag alloy base, mag allow LCD top cover and plenty of mag alloy in the palm rest for support. These systems are as tightly built as any Asus and much better built than the I1000 was.

Why, they are the exact same system except for the LED's and the true life LCD. They share the same mag alloy chassis components.

I smell smoke..nah...this couln't be a flame thread, could it? Anyways if that is your biggest complaint ( something you actually have to look for to eve see it) I suggest an Apple..or any other brand. If you think that is "crap"...well...send it back, lol...I mean, really? I have had mine 3 months & don't even have a scratch on it. I also have an XPS 2 that has been through hell & survived.

anyone notice firestarter was the thread starter & this seems to be a flame Dell thread lol.

...Oh wait, mine has the hole...damn called Dell the wil not take mine back
post #29 of 155
OK. I'm not trying to offend anyone but I apologize in advance if I do...

In my opinion, the main question/statement here to Firestarter will have to be "How long are you expecting to use your system 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?"

As I said before it's the notebook of a friend of mine...

And I don't care if somebody thinks it's a flame thread (I own three Dell systems and a handheld and I'm very satisfied with them), but keep in mind some people here say that the quality is actually going down and if the customers don't complain about that issue the companies will go on building low quality and think "...we'll built in good graphics and so on, cause the customers don't care about design and building ..."

I don't think the question is how long we use the systems, but waht about the next system...will it have more design issue for having more graphic power...
I plan to use my laptop 3 years max which is how long my complete care lasts.

Isn't E1705 plastic chasis? I only read M90 was only one with mag alloy chasis. I don't think I can stand on my E1705 w/o breaking it. M90 was demonstrated w/ a guy standing on it by Dell.

I noticed the hole on my XPS Gen 2 did not care and same with M1710. As for the machine it's as solid as it get's suits my need and hey gota love the power. You can find a inperfection in just about anything if you look for it hard enough. What I want to know who in the Hell uses their laptop at that angle anyway to be able to see this little inperfection? I would say that that would be a bigger problem if you are useing your laptop at that angle then this little inperfection. LOL As for the display they will replace that!

No, it's mag alloy as well. I know cause I had to snip off some bits to install my 7900GS dual pipe card at the time. I can even confirm that the boards for the 9400/M90/1710 are identical. The 9400 is missing the dock connector and the smartcard connector (which is just a USB port by the way) to become and M90. The M90 is missing the led connectors and associated parts. All in all, they are pretty much the same machine!

Actually, my Latitude D610 has that same hole and it hasnt bothered me one bit in the past year and a half...in fact, I didnt notice it til 5 mins ago when I read your post. That is a small issue and Dell shouldnt be obliged to do anything about it for you. That's like buying a new car and complaining that the rear windows dont go down all the way (as in most cars, they cant because of the wheel well). Get over it.
We have a e1705 with wobbly feet. It is damn annoying.
Well, thinking about it, the whole is there for the video card. It's right above it, for better airflow.

Do you think it is part of the design?

No matter how you look at it, there are plenty of places for water to get into your computer. Unless you pay a great price for any of the computers that are being built nowadays with "spill protection" and whatnot, then you just have to accept spilling something on the computer is not an option.

Also, maybe it's just me, but I DON'T want Dell's quality to increase. There are plenty of great, well built computers out there that I can pay a rediculous amount for, but I just want something that packs alot of bang in it for a good price. I take good care of my computer, so I don't need anything I can throw out my car while doing 90 and still work. The way I see it, quality increases, so does price. I think Dell is sitting right at a perfect spot right now
