Acer Aspire 5672 and Linux... the struggle continues

Well, it's that time of year again. Back to university for me. After all the failures and disappointments of not being able to setup linux on my 5672, I opted out for the horrible shell access in my university through SSH (and wireless is not always strong in all classes )

That was this part year, but this fall I want to have linux on my laptop. I was hoping that things would go even smoother this time with SuSE 10.1, but boy was I wrong.

So far, SuSE 10.1 is a nightmare. Installation went smoothly and without a problem. But when SuSE boots, the screen is corrupted and virtually not visible. Oh lord, I can't believe this... why why why does 5672 has such a bad reputation with UNIX/Linux.

OK, somebody (abf, that includes you ) please, help me out. What's next? Fedora? Ubuntu? Besides, I really wish I could have something with KDE. Help me out please.

Ubuntu, or KUbuntu.

Personally I would stick with gnome on Ubuntu, but that is partially cause I dislike KDE

yea ubuntu and kubuntu work flawless on my 5672, make sure it is the dapper drake distro, (the newest) and it detects, wifi, lan, etc, i choose kubuntu, as i have a preference to kde, but ubuntu has more support as far as forums and such go, and it's easier to follow as kubuntu is slightly different, but yea it works with the 5672

Posting this from Kubuntu (LiveCD)

WOW, nothing like my last attempt. No only it booted, but sound, bluetooth and even the ethernet all work!

Needless to say the X1400 doesn't work. Off to install the OS (and the X1400 drivers after). Will report back later on. So far I am pleased.

Just outta curiosity, why didya go with kubuntu over ubuntu? KDE fan? I wonder 'cause almost everyone around here seems to lean more towards Ubuntu.
my lean towards ubuntu lies in 2 factors. 1)i tried Kubuntu Breezy back when..and i found it totally unstable and my wireless didnt work out of the box (easy fix but i am lazy) unlike with regular ubuntu. 2) i prefer gnome to kde.

but it all boils down to: I am currently using Xubuntu with Fluxbox

Whoa... it's a miracle, everything EVERYTHING works. Installing the ATI drivers was a pain, but in the end, everything works. Will test it in the next few days, and post any problems I have (I am sure I'll have plenty).

why was installing ATi a pain, why didn't you just download them from the repos throgh synaptic? you just have to install them through synaptic/apt, edit xorg.conf from ati to fglrx and reboot...and you're done.

Couldn't download them through repos (MD5 sum error or something everytime I tried). Downloaded manually, installation was full of errors every single time. Sort out most of them.

The problem with not getting them through the repos is that if a kernel update is pushed through, it might break X, forcing you to reinstall the drivers. When a kernel update is pushed a driver update is usually initiated right after... at least it is with the nvidia drivers. I find it extremely annoying when a regular update kills my X session.

BTW, I set my Dad up with kubuntu with great success. For some reason he had a plethora of issues with Ubuntu. Kubuntu was our last resort. I personally have no desire to use it, but I was impressed none-the-less.

OK, so I did the repos way, and I can see that I have a problem.

The computer becomes very laggy when visiting certain "Graphic intense" websites (deviantart.com for example).

Unless someone knows what the problem is, I am going back to ATI.com's drivers.

HOLY, glxgears don't even run, they just freeze.

So do you have any idea just what exactly is the problem?

Sorry I can't help much more than this... Check out the wiki and see if you followed the install procedure properly:

You may have to purge your current drivers first.

all i had to do was install the repo drivers through synaptic, then change xorg.conf from "ati" to "fglrx" and reboot...thats it.
