Congrats. Please make sure you post your benchmarks - it will be interesting to see what a maxed out m5550 does.

Very Nice System. Only thing I would've done differently is purchased my RAM from Crucial or Newegg.

I ordered same system but with the 2.16ghz. Its on phase 5 right now.

Is there really a performance difference between say a 1.8 and a 2.33 dual core?? I mean I know theres SOME, but in overall system speed is it worth the 700 bucks?

The performance diff isn't that dramatic, from benchmarks I've seen...but it will depend on what people are using it for. If someone has the $$ for it, it isn't going to hurt to have the 2.33..

I don't believe you would see the difference with that kind of CPU upgrade. Seeing how games are becoming more GPU dependent. The upgrade that I feel is benefical is RAM (512mb to 1GIG, 1gig to 2gig). Seeing how the future of Windows is going to require more RAM.

You can open Firefox a split second faster, Word will be able to copy and paste a split second faster, and you can calculate pie a few seconds quicker. You can also zip/unzip large files a few seconds faster. It's all about the speed...

I hope your joking....

Everything I said was true :-)

I agree.. it was true. But you left out pulling up porn etc.. That matters to some people.

Maybe not for gaming, but for everything else it will make a difference...

Whether it's worth $700 is up to each individual.

You're a bargain hunter though, so it probably wouldn't be worth it to you. You can buy a Dell laptop for the difference in price of the processors...

If you run multi-threaded apps, or do 3d rendering, CAD type work, or multi-task a lot, you'll see the difference. Not sure why anyone would do that on an m5550, but the option is there if you want it.

That's true, nothing is more frustrating than slow loading porn.

lol ... your guys' posts made me laugh (it's all about the porn). As for the extra $$ spent ... well I figured I would pay up to $3000 for my laptop. I used to have the Area 51 m7700 and that thing was a brick. This time around I wanted something smaller, but also have the ability to game on it. My choices were the Dell XPS 1210 or the m5550.

And as for the memory, Alienware advertises low latency (CAS 4) DDR2 @ 667MHz. I did check newegg, crucial and corsair and I couldn't find any CAS4 DDR2 @ 667MHz in 1GB sticks. And if I did, I would have 2x256 sticks left over after I upgraded. So I figured just max out the specs since it fit well within what I wanted to spend.

Also, I guess I'm in phase 3 now ... and I will surely post benchmarks when I get it

Now that you speak of the RAM I didn't notices its Latency. So I'll call tomorrow and see if I can upgrade it. Its in Phase 5.

Oh btw, good choice with the Alienware vs M1210. I'm writing this on a m1210 and its Dell Replacement is in the mail. When that gets to my house, its going back to Dell. The LCD on this thing is horrible. This one flickers when the powermizer is turned up, so no speedy graphics for me. And from what I"ve read, Dell isn't doing much better with this replacements. So I figured I would get a head start on an alienware.

Long Live porn!!

ya, by going Alienware and for the same price I get a better cpu (2.33) and a better gpu (go 7600) than the Dell 1210 (best 2.16 and go 7400).

and ya if you think about it, you can only have 2 sticks of RAM. So if your gonna upgrade might as well do it now and not have 2 stick laying around.
Key thing to think about also with the M1210 is that the Video Memory is shared. 64mb is dedicated and 192 is shared with Memory. I guess the only thing I give the m1210 is its very portable, a little thick for a 12" though.

I think I have about 6 sticks of 256MB RAM lying around the house somewhere. I'm seriously considering just ordering my 2GB stock next time for the reasons you've mentioned.
