Is Dell coming out with a new Inspiron 8600?

I read *somewhere* that Dell is going to release an updated i8600 on the 6th of March. Is this true?

To me.. that seems unlikely ... Not many companies do product refreshes on Saturdays. Besides, what would they be updating? And if they did, why wouldn't they change the name to i8700 or something? Where did you hear this rumor?

I read it either in the official Dell forums or in this forum ... I believe it was in a post by someone who was commending their widescreen WUXGA.

Anyone out there with more info on this?

I hate to say it but if they brought out a product refresh just 1 day after my new 8600 arrives I would shed tears of frustration then mostly likely send it back and urchase the new model. So whats the real deal here?

Thanks,

The only possible thing i forsee is the video adapter because they recently updated the video on the M60 so we could be expecting a Geforce 5700

for those who must know the 5700 is theoretically faster than the M11 in nearly every aspect of gaming

So would that make the screen a widescreen widescreen uxga? whoa, must be um, pretty darn wide there. just curious.

I'm very dubious of this claim, given the pre-production tests of the 5700. Unless you meant to say M10-P, in which case I'll agree with the claim, but I'm dubious of the real world results given the pre-production tests I've seen.

I think it's gonna come down to individual games as to which card, the ATI 9700 or Nvidia 5700, performs best. Nvidia seems to have the edge with OpenGL oriented games, like Doom 3. On the other hand, ATI looks to be the card of choice for Half-Life 2. To me, the answer is simple: buy each card, then just install the one that works best for your game. Just make sure you keep track of all the screws when you open up your notebook's chassis 4-5 times a day to swap video cards.

Are the video devices interchangeable on the i8600? I mean, between a GeForce FX or ATI Radeon. i.e. if my notebook comes with an ATi 9600 Pro 128 meg card and the GeForce FX 5700 comes out... will I be able to buy the spare part from Dell and slap it in there? or will I need to go from Ati to a newer ATI board?

Thanks,

It all depends if Dell releases another gpu(5700 or m11) for the 8600 form factor. If they do, then yes you can--if not then you have to choose from current gpu offerings for 8600 (5200, 5650, m10).

Dell are you sure! That would be great because it does not look like the M11 will work with the 8600.

I would have to believe that if the new Nvidia 5700 Go fits the Dell M60, it'd fit the 8600, as well. The two machines are virtually identical, although I think the M60 looks better. Am I wrong on this one?

tdeway - since theres no real direct and fair comparison of the two we have to go on assumptiosn based off there desktop counter parts ie radeon 9600 xt vs geforce 5700

jswriter - yeah seriously its ridiculous i was going to sell my M10 for a NV34 but im going to end up keeping them both sheesh I blame picky programmers and whatnat for there biased programming :-p im kidding but id reallly wish by the end of the products development the games will run nearly the same on either card
