Hello everybody,
this is a lengthy thread but I hope you'll take some time to read it and help me decide. I'm very THANKFUL TO ALL IN ADVANCE.

HP DV5220us - 1100USD (after rebates, before tax, from Hp.com)

Intel Duo Core T2050 (1.60 GHz)
15.4" WXGA BrightView Widescreen
Graphics Card 128MB NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 7400
1.0GB DDR2 SDRAM (2x512MB)
Hard Drive 100 GB 5400 RPM SATA
8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG
Battery 6 Cell Lithium
6-1 card reader, weight 6,5lb
3 years express limited warranty

as a bonus for "free": HP Deskjet F380 All-in-One

or

ACER5102WMLi - 1050USD (from Circuit City, after rebates and before tax)
AMD Turion 64 X2 - TL50 1.6GHz
WXGA TFT active-matrix 1280 x 800
ATI RadeonĀ® Xpress 1100
RAM 1GB 533MHz DDR2
Hard drive size 120GB 4200
DVD SuperMulti (DVD-RAM, DVD+/-R double layer) drive
Modem 56K ITU V.92,Ethernet,Wireless 802.11g/b
5-in-1 media card reader,
integrated WEBCAM
Weight 6.2 lbs.
4 years limited warranty with Circuit City warranty plan

as a bonus (back to school): "Lexmark Printer/Scanner/Copier (X2470); D-Link 802.11g Wireless Router, Internet Security Suite r2"

I am generally leaning more towards HP, but have might reservations about it too:

Pros (HP)
- great screen (liked it more than that of Acer)
- does not get hot (did a check on that + reviews say so)
- personable design
- great speakers (one of the best on a laptop)
- overall a very good sturdy feel
- HP - an established brand
- Intell Duo as compared to AMD
- quick play DVD option (no system boot needed)

Cons (HP)
- more expensive
- have to order on-line and wait for it
- battery does not last so long
- 3 years warranty (Acer's got 4 years warranty if I go with the CC plan) + rumors that HP service sucks
- no webcam

Pros (ACER)
- great price/performance ration
- webcam is very handy to me
- battery that lasts 3,5 hours
- a nice "back to school" bonus
- very good reviews
- lighter
- apparently a very good wireless
- can get it immediately from the store and in case of a problem, do not need to send it to manufacturer

Cons(Acer)
- seems to get hotter than HP
- jacks in the front (pretty stupid)
- very lousy speakers
- slower HDD (only 4200)

User description:
I do a lot of word processing, surfing, DVD watching....so just the common stuff which every computer can handle today well. I do a bit of picture editing, play games occassionaly. Need the notebook to be portable and stable, as I need it for my uni work ( libraries) etc. I tend to use the speakers quite a lot, also I like the webcam integrated feature. I am definitely interested in something that will last for couple of years - so reliability and warranty is very crucial to me. I don't like if the compuer gets too hot and I like it if it's not noisy either.

As you see, it's a very close call and I can't decide. School starts in couple of days and I want to be clear on this ASAP.

christina

btw. you can suggest other options, just to let you know: I don't want to get a dell inspiron 1505 (even though it's a great value )- simply because I cannot see it before I make the purchase. I cannot afford IBMs either - no doubt though there are great computers. i like ASUS, but they seem a bit pricy here in the U.S. (as compared to Europe).

I would go with the HP out of those two choices. The Turion X2 is going to train power faster then the Core Duo, it has integrated graphics, and the hard drive is 4200rpm which is just slow period. I ordered an HP dv2000t this week. HP service and support should be just as good as Dell and Dell one of the most popular because of price. I would take another look at the E1505 if you want the best value for your money. There are plenty of pictures for them around on the web and you always have 21 days return.

Thanks Burningrave.
How does it work with the 21 days return? Have you ever tried it? You know I imagine it's hassle to send it back, wait for the money etc. Otherwise E1505 would be right up there on the list with HP and Acer. These three machines appeal to my senses

Christina,

You said something about if ordering thru HP if there was a problem you'd have to ship it back. and mentioning the "wait".

On shipping it back, vs being able to swap it out at a local store... Yes there are pro's to that, but overall over the course of the unit's lifetime that is a non-issue. Most local stores are going to give you a max of 30 days. Anytime beyond that 30-days your going to have to sent it in for repair.

The exception to that is www.COSTCO.com.... COSTCO has a 180 day return window

You can return within that 180 days for any reason and get ALL your money back, ALL.

Costco has pre-built units (that you can purchase locally, touch and feel... Pre-builts would also come in handy if there was a problem and you wanted to exchange it on the spot... Remember ... 180-days

Costco also has CTO machines (Custom To Order)... order it and have it about 7 -10 days. ... Directly from the HP factory in CHINA.

Pro's of ordering a CTO machine is you get the LATEST "hardware" revision.... instead of getting a pre-built that may have a older hardware revision.... CTO units getting the latest revision of the parts.... Downside of a CTO order is you wait a few days... But you get what YOU want in the machine and get the latest hardware./and or software...

Order a CTO unit and their's a problem? Just walk into any Costco store and hand it back to them, get ALL your money back... anytime within 180 days of purchase... After that you'd have to contact the mfg for warranty issues.

You also have the option to contact HP directly, send it in for repair if you prefer anytime within that 180 day period.... It would be just like purchasing thru HP direct after the 21 day grace period expires, you could send it in for repair... if you wanted... But if you've got 180 days you'd be a fool to do so.

Two more issues, tips.

Always order a unit with the BASE RAM, and if you feel a need to upgrade order ram from www.newegg.com ALL the mfg's charge too much for their ram upgrades.... AND they KEEP the base ram (example 512mb) if you upgrade to 2 gig...
Charging you like $240 for the 2 gig "upgrade"... which means you're really paying $240 for 1.5 gig worth of ram!!!

You can buy 2 gig outright thru Newegg.com for about $160- $180... and KEEP the base installed ram as spares (very helpful if you have a RAM problem later on!!!)... You could also sell the base ram to re-coup some of your money.

Another issue I posted in response to your other thread(s) asking which is better, etc... Keep in mind the dv5000 series is just that, the dv5000 series.... It being split between the AMD chipped machines (Example dv5000z)..
OR the INTEL cpu'd machines, the (T) series.. (dv5000t)

All these dv5020, , etc are ALL being either a dv5000T, or Z. So keep that in mind when doing research.

Here's the link to the COSTCO.COM CTO page.... they also have pre-builts and units from other mfg's and with the 180-day return window it's a no-brainer on who to buy from. http://www.costco.com/CTO/HPLanding....opnav=&browse=

PS: You can buy the EW /insurance plans through (HP in this case) anytime as long as your unit is in warranty. Luckily for you Costco is now listing some of the EW warranty plans... Back in April 06 they were not, so I called the Executive Offices of Costco and had a in-depth conversation with a district manager locally in person. Nice to see my call(s) and efforts were not for nothing.

One last thing, here is a thread you need to read thru on the GPU's (video cards) used in notebooks these days. Before you buy ANYTHING, you need to read thru it , print it out, cut and paste into a document with your needs and concerns , take it with you when shopping to be SURE you get a machine with a GPU which will serve you best in the LONG-TERM.... Fast GPU being a plus in games, CAD drafting... and will be a issue in the new version of Windows (VISTA, with the Aero interface).... Allot of the low end cards will "say" they can run "Vista", when in fact they will... with all the eye candy turned OFF. With a FAST GPU you should be able to run with the eye-candy ON.

Mobile Graphics Card Comparison Chart

If you're looking for a gaming laptop, Or doing graphic intensive work the GPU should be your top priority. GPU is the "video card" for those of you who don't know.

Even if you're not into games, keep in mind that Windows itself "likes" a fast video card and the new Vista will be VERY graphics intensive.
For anything that is graphic intensive the GPU is more important than the CPU in most cases.

Name some actual reasons why you would not go with a Dell laptop. I've had several Dell laptops and have sold several Dell laptops and i've been quite satisfied. I like the looks of some of the other brand laptops a little better but as far as performance and build quality goes i havn't seen an issue with Dell laptops. With Dell i can also easily get whatever part i need replaced shipped out to me. Dell will work with you until you are satisfied with the laptop. It's also easy to get free OS install CD's and whatever other little freebies you can think of by just going to the Dell chat and requesting them usually. You can also get a nice discount on upgradeable parts through Dell spare parts. I know back when the Go 7800 GTX was first released i got it very cheap through Dell compared to what they sold elsewhere. And Dell won't be easily beat when it comes to the components you get in the laptop for the price. Most Dell haters are that way from their lack of knowledge of how to get what they need from Dell.

excuse me???????????????????????????????

before you say i know nothing i am a programmer (C++) I program for banks, and IT Security.

Oh to order a Inspiron 6000 and pay for it,but get a Inspiron 1300.

Build Quality how about it does not fall apart when you get it.

WeARenotAlone,

thank you very much for that article.
it's quite interesting but I'd have my reservations: do you think that it's statistically significant? I mean the article would have been great if they had conducted at least 30 trials or somethings (you the sample needs to be really greater than 30, a statistical rule of thumb).

btw. would anyone know how this forum works? Both of my contributions were moved from the General notebook forum to this "Acer notebooks" even though my questions weren't Acer specific. I don't get this..why did the moderator do that? We are not talking just about the Acer5102, but also about HPs and Dells and other computers. I am angry at this for the following reason: as long as the thread was in the general section, I was receiving very different polls results - of course in an Acer subfold, there're likely to be more Acer fans so I guess this might skew the polls too. Besides, there are other contributions on specific computers (even Acers) which have not been move at all. Sorry for my complaining, but I don't like this, especially because this is a poll on two computers and thus there's no rational reason why to put it in a Acer subdield only - guess the whim of the moderator plays a role here.
Yes, I agree, mods should move it back to general. In fact, I was on last night and I'm sure they posted it here and then moved it back to general. Maybe Acer own this forum! Come on guys, I like a fair fight. Put it back in general.

EDIT: I will probably be banned now!!! lol
