Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a security suite when I get my 9400. Right now, I have pc-cillin internet secruity suite running on 2 comps and I like it. I've read it's fairly good but it's firewall isn't the greatest. I've also looked at the Zone alarm 6.5 security suite and it's supposed to have everything good but the anti-virus on it isn't so great. Any suggestions. Or should I get a good standalone anti virus and get the free ZA firewall. Which method will be the least resource hogging?

I have used the free versions of Zonealarm and AntiVir Personal Edition for ages.

I think they both do a great job.

Another good prog for cleaning history, registry etc. is CCleaner.

PC Cillin (Trend Micro) FTW!!

I usually dont trust anything else, but i got the pro-edition AVG for free, so i use that. but i still like PC Cillin better

Zone Alarm IMHO is preferable to the rest for Firewall protection and as for AV consider Norton Basic Suite or Avast.

So you would get a standalone antivirus and the ZA free firewall? What are the best standalone anti-virus's? I don't mind paying, I just dont want a resource hog and I hear Norton is.

I use BitDefender

NOD32, PrevX1 and Windows Firewall (was using ZA until a few days ago when I got fed up with it - yet to decide what, if anything, will be replacing it).

Prevx1 is one up until a couple of weeks ago I had never seen mentioned before. Through my own stupidity I got infected with some spyware, Windows Defender and Spyware Doctor could not eliminate it (they both detected and removed some componants but not all) then through google I found Prevx1, removed everything straight away and is still installed to date.

BitDefender in my opinion is the best you can get. I use it for my whole network and it has been the easiest I have used and gives you control in every aspect of antivirus. The firewall works great too and I hardly notice any slowdown or backgroud processes with it enabled. It has caught a lot of infected and suspected viruses already and I would not buy a computer without it.

Really? Well it sounds great. So does it come in 2 versions, standalone anti-virus and antivirus/firewall combo? If so, what would you reccomend? Just anti-virus plus ZA free edition or the combo?

Personally I run Zone Alarm Suite Firewall/AV/Spyware. It's all inclusive so I don't have 15 different processes running for seperalte applications. I used to use Norton Systemworks for AV/system maintenance but I started liking the product less and less over the years.

It moved away from a very powerful utility suite to a "the user is stupid we better not give him any control over how things are fixed" suite.

This is an intresting question.....................

Everyone has their preference, mine use to be Norton 2005 anti virus & Zonealarm Pro for the spyware & firewall but still was not happy with it's spyware capability so then ran spysweeper. The problem here is the number of resources used so now I've dumped Norton and run Zonealarms security suite with Spysweeper.

Personally I think most anti virus programs are pretty good, but a great firewall and spyware tool is also important and I don't think there are any better than Zonealarm & Spysweeper.

The number of computers I have fixed due to spyware/virus infections is amazing but it all comes down to one simple thing. Firstly they install broad band - then start downloading all sorts of crap - without updating anything like SP2, etc without a firewall then complain when it all turns to crap!!!

That happent to my brother, until he made me come over to his place and format and reinstall windows

As for me. I use Nod32 and Zonealarm Pro. Every 4 weeks, Spybot and Ad-Aware scan for spyware, the reason why i have set it for this is because ZA does a good job of removing the small basic spyware along with Firefox(with adblocker extention) blocks most of all the spyware from loading

Alright, well thanks for the great replies everyone. I already use spybot, ad-aware, windows defender, CCleaner and hijackthis so these programs don't have to be good for spyware. Right now the ZoneAlarm Suite sounds the most enticing.

the advantage of Zone Alarm is that it not only monitors incoming traffic, but monitors outgoing traffic as well. So if you have something undetected that tried to establish a connection to the internet you will be notified as well
