Wirless 3945BG & XP problem

Hello,
I have HP dv8229 laptop, and my wirless network is very poor (slow transfer and lot of disconnections).
the problem is only with my Windows XP pro SP2.
my router is 3com 3CRWE554G72T
my wirless card (built in) is Intel 3945BG
the router and the laptop are in the same room.

I also have Windows Vista Beta 2 installed on the same laptop and the network works great (very fatst 1000-1700Kb/Sec & no disconnections in all rooms in the house).

it seems to be Driver/registry issue.
I downloaded the latest drivers from HP.com and intel.com but both didn't help.
I removed the firewall that I had (ZoneAlam) but still the same problem.

any ideas how to solve the problem? (except reinstalling windows - this will be the last chance to do so)

If you are using the entire tool set of the Intel Pro/Wireless drivers, v10.5.1.57, you might be running into the memory problems the management console has. All you need is the wireless drivers and let Windows manage it. I would suggest running the driver installation program again and deinstall everything but the driver. After that, reboot and run through your network tests again.

The story about this issue was on the front page of this site. It does work. I was having issues with my work HP nc6230 running slow.

Enjoy,
Randal

I tried to install only the driver, but still have the same problem.

I've had similar issues and found that changing the WinXP wireless advanced settings for connecting to my access point did the trick. I don't have it in front of me, but in effect I switched to something like: WEP and Open System, if that makes any sense.

Best of luck!

what is Open System and where is that setting?

Terminology is everything, I'll have to remember that...

Under XP's Wireless Network Connection:
Select Tab = Wireless Networks
Select "your network" under Preferred Networks
Click Properties
New window - "your network Properties"
Network Authentication = {Open, Shared, WPA, WPA-PSK}
Data Encryption = {Disabled, WEP}

In effect, this turns OFF any wireless encryption between the notebook and router during the initial handshake (setup). The data however is encrypted (WEP portion) once authorization is obtained.

Hope this helps...

My driver ver is listed as: 10.1.1.7 <-- I updated recently and this made a BIG improvement in my signal (never had dropoff issues - just range and signal).

Intel has released a new version of their drivers. You can download it from here.

My experience with this driver so far is if you are running XP, all you need is the driver. In case you are using Windows 2000, and trying to attach to a secure access point with WEP, you will need the Connection Manager as well. The previous version of Connection Manager was causing havoc on my work HP nc6230, eating over 128MB of memory.

I've downloaded the latest version of the driver from intel's web site but I still have the same problem.
I tried to install only the driver and tried to to install the full pack (including the connection manager) but still have same problem.
I'm going to try to reinstall the windows (Clean Install) and see how things will go on.

Hey guys,
The problem is not with the driver of the wirless LAN Adapter (Intel 3945BG).
the problem is with the Bluetooth service.
It is a very weird problem:
When I have paired devices with the blutooth and they are not connected, the wirless LAN adapter (Intel 3945BG) makes problems with the connection (Slow + Disconnections all the time)
If I connect all bluetooth the devices or unpair all the bluetooth devices, the Wirless network works great!!!!!!

I'm sure with the things that I wrote, and I made hundreds of tests.
I tried to install different drivers for the blutooth and got the same problem.

I will conclude my things:
The wireless Adapter (Intel 3945BG) works fine when:
- Bluetooth driver is not installed
- Bluetooth driver is installed and there are no paired devices
- Blutooth driver is installed and all the paired devices are connected.

The wireless Adapter (Intel 3945BG) Doesn't work correctly when:
- Bluetooth driver is installed and there are paired devices but they are not connected.
There is a process called BTStackServer.exe. each time it takes CPU (2-5%), the docconnection occurs.

The problem is with Windows XP Home (Original version of HP) and Pro (which I installed)
Do you have any suggestions for this weird problem?

The problem that I described above happens only when "Nokia PC Suite" is Conneced.
The single solution that I found is to unpair my devices each time I don't need them, or to uninstall the "Nokia PC Suite"

Thaks a lot for all those who tried to help me finding the problem

Hrrm... I dont have this issue but perked up on this post. I use the Sony Erricson PC Suite without issue... sooo:

Try BitPim or somesuch instead for your sync needs? I used BitPim with Sprint phones and it worked pretty well (free too!) for what it was.

I'll try what you said.

I wanna try also to uninstall the Bluetooth Stack. it may help. I read in the Nokia PC Suite guide that Bluetooth Stack software may make problems and let the PC Suite to work uncorrectly.

I've had a dv8000t for a few weeks that seems to have the same issue...

Based on what I just read... I just turned off bluetooth EVERYTHING... so we'll see what it does tomorrow.... but I only have a few more days to return it if I don't like it.... and I really don't want to live with the slow wireless speed or dropped connections... Or without Bluetooth.... Or waste time monkeying around trying to fix it....

Only the wireless portion though... a hardwire connection, and the network card is totally fine

Hello whomung,
My wrieless is working fine when I don't have any paired devices and Nokia PC Suite installed.

If you don't use Nokia PC Suite, There should be no problems.

But if you use Nokia PC Suite, the problem of the drops will be only if there are paired devices but they are not connected.
This is the problem that I have.

if you have the drops problem even without having Nokia PC Suite installed, try to close most of the running proccesses and check if you still have the problem.

Also try to End the BTStack.exe service and check out your wireless.

Good luck

Thanks Tony

I don't have anything "nokia" on the machine.... In fact, no bluetooth anything yet installed.... phone, palm pilot, mouse, nada --but yesterday, wireless broadband was slower than really slow dialup.... lots of "timeouts "and totally dropped connections..... all day long

After seeing this thread, last night, I went in to the control panel, and turned off everything BT.... and the wireless today has been fine.....

So it looks like BT something to do with it, but i need to investigate more. Maybe it was because BT had everything checked "on" by default and nothing was actually installed????

I'll call HP and ask them about it

I've had great success with my Intel wireless device by doing this
Go to Start->right click "my computer"->properties->"hardware" tab->"device manager"->under "network adaptors" right click "Intel 3945BG connection"->properties->"advanced" tab->under "property" highlight "Power Management" and remove the check on "Use default value" and then move the arrow marker to the "highest" setting.
This will keep the card from powering down and loosing the connection. The card is designed to match the power output of the signal it is logged into but doesn't work very well and will loose the signal. Using the highest output will enable the device to stay connected. Remember to click on "OK" which will save this setting. I don't remember if I needed to reboot but don't think so.
