Hello eveyone,
I need your advice about which of these two you would recommend:

MJ-12® m7700a
AMD Athlon™ 64 FX-60 with HyperTransport and Dual Core Technology
2GB Dual Channel DDR SO-DIMM at 400MHz - 2 x 1024MB

Or

MJ-12® m7700i
Intel® Pentium® 4 660 Desktop Processor w/ HT Technology 3.6GHz 800MHz FSB 2MB
3GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 533MHz - 2 x 512MB

Thank you for your help fellas.

Hey Bfisch06, Thanks for your reply. Your help is appreciated.

I'm an 3d animator and a gamer.
Other advice would be helpful too.

Thanks

The FX-60 is dual core and an awesome gaming processor. The dual core will help with 3d animations also, and any 3d applications.

I'd go with the AMD platform.

It is too bad the AMD platform is limited in memory, with Vista coming, and 3d applications the extra memory would be good. Not as important as the processor though.

yeah i was thinking that w/ the the vista coming, 3gb memory would be helpful for future years.
This is why i am hesitating so much.
Thanks for your reply HammerHead

You can easily upgrade RAM on these things anytime in the future. A processor upgrade requires shipping it back to AW and you paying a good deal of money for shipping and the part and labor. RAM you can install yourself (and not void your warranty- just by calling them) and can buy on newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com. However, the AMD version only supports 2 gigs of RAM, unlike the intel version (4 gigs I think (Vista will use all 4 gigs, but XP can't))

Do you think the Vista will work fairly on a AMD 2gb ?
Or should i get the Intel with the 3gb and think about the future Vista?
I was told these two will run at the same speed in Xp and also in Vista. Is that true?

Thanks again for all the help guys,

Hi Louaye,

Be careful when you think Alienware notebook upgrade...

There are many running Beta Vista with much less power than either platform you are describing.

In order to really be 'sure' I would recommend a "Windows Vista Ready" machine when they become available...

Just for clarification, if you're under warranty, upgrades only cost Alienware's vendor cost, which is about 10% off their "retail" price for parts. If you send your machine to AW for an upgrade while under warranty, you pay shipping one way, and vendor cost for the parts, Alienware covers the labor and run in, and the return shipping and return the machine to you with a fresh install of windows as if new.

I'm not sure, but I think the aurora 7700 only has two memory slots, so that's why the 2G limit. The Area 51 with the pentium processor can come with up to 4G memory.

Thanks Hammer. We would all be lost without you.
