Just what the question asked. Although none of us can tell the overall experience of all customers of a large OEM, and all we see is a small slice of the whole picture; but it is useful to see which manufacturers have provided negative experiences for their users. And if a company consistently give its customers the short end of the stick in terms of build-quality and customer support, then it would most likely be useful information for those of us that would be buying in the future.

Edit: companies such as Gateway and Emachines are listed separately, since they have been different companies until very recently, and most of past experiences likely have occurred when they were separate entities; same for HP and Compaq.

My Prediction Is;

1st Toshiba (Being the worst)
2nd Dell
3rd HP/Compaq (Merger)
4th Sony
5th Acer
6th IBM (Being the best)

Can't wait for the result!!! Nice Poll Hardball (should have been done ages ago).

1 -- Toshiba
2 -- HP/Compaq
3 -- Sony
4 -- Dell
5 -- Acer
6 -- IBM/Lenovo

why is not sager (err..clevo) on the list?

Oh, because in my estimation, Sager did not have enough volume to be counted as a major OEM. Since there are max 9 OEMs plus one "others" in this poll, so not every since manufacturer/reseller is listed here.
you could have combined HP/Compaq into one since they are one company. thus making room for Sager...although they are not "major" as in "available @ best buy" , its one of the more popular brands on this forum.

Thats no problem, we just add the total of HP and Compaq together!

Agree with Hardball, stick with the major manufacturers

keep in mind these results are in every way irrelevent. people who answer are in no way representive of even the user proportions between these suppliers (you dont see as many gateway users here as asus users or as often), user base comparison (dell vs. emachines), among many important factors. and then there is the other part about how most people have never dealt with more than one of those choices. such a sample population is not indicative of anything at all, outside of pure whim. i am more curious about what these people strive to learn out of this if they understood how pointless and counter-truthful their poll ideas are.

Yes the figures will be representative of the number sold, but if we can all agree that Dell sell the most, and some other manufacturer does worse in the figures then I think these results are very relevant.

Would somebody else like to answer whats below??? lol

Acer i suppose, they' 'seems' refused to upgrade my Aspire 5612WLMi from intergrated GMA950. i know is possible to upgrade from 945GM chipset but they just say, "we only stock part from original models" which mean if my laptop doesn't have graphic card, i can never upgrade to dedicated graphic, because the acer techician team doesn't want or allowed to. Which is pointless, and Geforce Go series is not you can purchase anywhere and install it by myself.

Second bad of acer OEM OS is, that it comes with alot junk programs, i cannot stop the installation when it installing OEM WinXP.. which leave me alot jobs to do (uninstall each program one by one). And left windows a "leaveover" mess. Which still uses alot space thou..

What you think my prob?

In all likelihood you're totally wrong about the upgradable graphics card. The 945GM has the option to be paired with a dedicated graphics card, but the only notebook that has done this is the Sony SZ and the motherboard HAS to be designed with it in mind. Most likely the motherboard for the dedicated graphics card version is different. From the looks of the Acer UK website, the motherboard with the go7300 uses the 945PM chipset, and not the 945GM, thus it's a completely different motherboard. To upgrade you would need a new motherboard, which will be several hundred dollars. Add in labour to rip apart your notebook and swap motherboards and you might as well get a new notebook. Not Acer's fault here, you just didn't do your research before buying a notebook.

Almost everyone else's consumer notebooks are full of bloatware, Acer could hardly be considered worst in this regard.

I look thought 945GM and PM diagram only different is GM has intergrated that's all. And i believe each OEM has different design and therefore disabled PCIE slot even the chipset supports it. And yea is true if ripping my laptop for fitting new mainboard sounds like buying a new one is better, but still that going to save some money for a complete new one.

I bought my laptop on very cheap discounted price USD $1,185.42 and is not more than 1 month old! (Non discount was USD$1,431.97)

eMachines.

Bought one of their PCs.

Would reboot on startup. Sent it back.

Clacimed the fixed it.

Would still reboot randomly. Sent i back.

Claimed the replaced the mobo and ram... but i wrote down the p/n and s/n...they didnt replace anything... they just didnt venture past the problem or could not replicate it... would still reboot

vowed never to deal with them again...

I dont have experience will all those, but the emachines I've seen were lousy, so that's what I put.

no Sager option? I wouldn't predict them to get many votes, but it seems odd to exclude them esp on this forum.

I'm with Duke on this one. I have worked on so many emachines systems that if I ever see another one I may just snap. Last one I worked on was the cpu was overheating due to insufficient cooling. Ended up modding the case with a top fan to vent the excess heat.

Dell's going to win, I get a new Latitude every year from my company, and every single one has had a catastrophic failure at some point. My current D600 has had an LCD and a system board, and of course a new battery.
I really don't have any experience with most of the listed companies.

My office machines have always been Dell or IBM, and the Dells always have problems
All my personal machines have been HP, and I never had any problems with those.
i voted toshiba, as i've had a horrendous experience w/ them.

looks like i'm the odd man out on the emachines. i bought a cheap refurbished emachine for my wife and 3 yo to play w/ we've had it over a year and at times it's been on for weeks or months straight, only gets turned off when the power goes out. i don't even think i paid $400 for it and i've never had a problem w/ it - has an amd 3500, 512 ram, 160gb hdd, dvd/cd burner etc. maybe when they are refurbished this is the first time they are quality checked. *shrugs*

i think people need to remember how many Pcs DELL sells in comparison to all the other OEMs... your bound to see more complaints..

Compaq. Waited a month to get the laptop and when I opened the box the Keyboard was broken. They wouldn't send me that parts and want me to ship the laptop back to them for 7~10 Bussiness to so they could fix it.
