E17

Sorry BT its not the screenshot I promised, wont be home for a bit, and actually I tihnk I will be holding off on that, to be explained....

Just in case there are others other than me that are masochistic enough to use E17 as their WM, know that get-e.org has posted that for the moment it is pretty broken, with problems like Minimize and Maximize dont work, most existing themes dont work, etc. So for the moment I wouldnt update and keep eyes on get-e.org as they have mentioned posting when it becomes more stable again...

On the flip side one of the last objects I was REALLY hoping would get implemented soon is on its way in, the mouse bindings config is heading in which was one of my few pet peeves about it as I had to remap the ALT key functionality by hand to a different key as in Ardour I use the alt key a lot, and that had conflicts with the WM bindings.

In all the amount of recent updates to it and dialogs being made and added it is getting close to a state where it might be more useable for most people(Once they finish fixing all the minor details mentioned above Ill post up a screenshot after I update as I would like to do some things to my current setup anyways when I get back home.

Unfortunatly screenshots dont accurately portray fun things like animated backgrounds etc. that e does support, for instance anytime I run my cursor over the icon in my background it slowly fades from red to blue or vice versa, just small fun things.

Looking forward to it. I jst wanna see what a regular work environment looks like, something with file managers, browser, and other apps open to show what a regular working environment looks like.

When I used E17 there were vary basic thing I had problems with. The biggest being that I couldn't find a stable file manager that had enough features to make it useful. I also hated the icon bar and wanted to see alternative ways of launch apps.

btw, seablade, you have to do an audio howto thread sometime. Something to share your techniques with jack connections and ardour. I still haven't been able to wean myself off of cubase (I have a small win partition on my desktop machine just for audio).

The problem has to do with midi support. The click tracks are the foundation of my sessions and I completely depend on them. I also need to be able to set time signatures. I haven't found any good resources on how to address those things.

Hmm depending on how you use the Midi Rosegarden may be something you might want to look into. It is for midi what Ardour is for audio.

Ardour at the moment will do a click track and time signatures on it I believe, however Midi support is still coming via Google's SoC, I havent heard much about it recently, and I believe Ardour 2.0 SVN is quite unstable right now to download from what I heard so I wouldnt reccomend it for a couple of days at least.

Ill probably tackle the audio howto along with restarting a lot of my basic howtos when I get a drupal setup like I would like... if anyone wants to volunteer to help me get my professional site converted to drupal and looking artistic I am sure that wont slow me down at any rate...

Heh figured you would be interested in this BT, pulled off the LAU list in response to accusations of things not working in ardour...

9) sequence MIDI and/or OSC MIDI recording and playback is now operational in ardour2.0's MIDI branch c/o dave robillard's SoC2006 project.
I will be downloading and testing 2.0 when I get home, should give them time to stabalize it I believe if what I heard is correct about stability of it for the next couple of days. Seablade

That's interesting. I tried out rosegarden but am having some issues. I just have to sit down and play with it for a while.

Well that was quick, get-e.org is now reporting the Desktop Environment working again. Note that many themes still need to be converted apparently as various names referenced in them have changed.

Means it will be interesting when I get back to upgrade and play with new toys See if I can put together a nice theme to run in the background, and post up some screenshots.

I should mention, while he did mention playback and recording working in the branch, I am not sure if they have tracks supported yet to be able to do much with them, but the major part of that I believe was the engine which is now working.

Here's the lovely rosegarden message I get:
Code:
Warning: Color name "black" is not defined
Rosegarden Sequencer: Segmentation Violation: this shouldn't happen, sorry.
All of the modules give this error. I don't want to clutter this thread with audio stuff, but I have a feeling that rosegarden is broken in the ubuntu repos.

Hmm well to be honest that seems like it might be a themeing issue, but since i dont use rosegarden, I have no clue sorry

Ill give it a shot when I get home(About a week now I think) and see what I can get.

Well just a real quick one for you BT, I havent touched it and the look will be entirely changing, along with mroe than a few actions over the next week or so, but this was a basic default install running the Carbon Theme from a while back. The Carbon theme is no longer updated and as a result doesnt work anymore, and besides I kinda like borderless windows(See Firefox in there for an example) so I will probably be making my own. You can also see the background image on the left in the middle of changing from Blue to Red as the cursor had touched it to trigger that. Kinda cool overall, but I definitly need to do more work, I will post up a new one when I finish teaching myself the themeing in E.

how sexy is that
That's interesting. If you get a chance, can you post a shot with a file manager? I have never gotten any of them to work in E17.

See what I can do when I get home, though I may just jump into configuring a new setup

One of the things I wanted to also mention is that I had font issues in E17 and it looks like you do too. The Gimp and firefox fonts are really out of wack. Plus the antialiasing isn't as clean as it should be.

Because I do webdesign most of the time, fonts have to look perfect for me.

Yea font issues are always interesting for me, but not to big a deal typically for me in FF as A) I dont do much web browsing on this machine, and B) I can easily zoom with CTRL+MouseScroll to whatever I need, but I have never set up antialiasing which I probably should sometime. I am probably just going to jump into reconfiguring my box when I get home, so maybe ill start a thread for the finer details like that to get worked out on.

EDIT: PS BT just for grins and giggles I looked this back up, figured you might be interested as you just mentioned it above...

Heh ok so I was bored and while downloading the install CD for Gentoo to restart from scratch cause I am crazy like that, I also downloaded the E-LiveCD which I have wanted to try for a while, and booted up. Does a MUCH better job at showing off e17 for eye candy....

Keep in mind its a live CD with no customization besides the default. I would instlal based off this if it was Gentoo derived and not Debian, but to each their own BT ya might want to give it a shot and see what you think. Just for the record what you dont see is the background sparkling(Animation kinda like stars poping in and out of existance on the desktop on occasion)

Well here ya go BT, screenshot with a filemanager open, in this case entice which certainly takes some getting used to, but seems like it could be incredibly powerful, for example if I want to launch a commandline command I simply hit escape and start typing. A lot of it is keyboard driven, so more akin to emacs in that regards, probably not for most people, though useable, but as I said, once I get used to it I think I will like it.

Still working on it, but I gotta say, this is my quickest gentoo install yet, had some problems with grub being picky about when it wanted my SATA drive to be hd0 and when it wanted my IDE(Removeable) to be it, but once I got past that I had this up and running in a matter of hours. Really the majority of what I need to do now is finish setting it up for realtime audio(Jack, ardour, etc), install blender... and yep that is about it. Of course I havent slept much as I had a busy enough schedule before redoing this, but i gotta say, the way E17 is right now, and the ease of configuration now make it well worth it for me.

I think before I do the above though I may spend some time getting transparency working. I am a bit worried though as I am getting an error on the console suggesting my glx X11 driver isnt loading, though it seems like it is from the log, and I am only getting 600-700 frames in glxgears where I know I was getting over 1000 before, and I believe in the 3500 range last I checked this machine.... Working on that, but not real sure what is causing it yet, I may be starting a new thread soon about it at this rate, well see how it affects my programs though.

Checking for life signs of Kenny NO

Cracked me up when I saw that, yes I am not joking, that was in the configure step of the emerge.
