Newegg RAM

Thread Starter
Ok, I have been hearing alot recently about buying memory from the web stie Newegg.com And I have a few questions. I just ordered a Aurora m9700 laptop (which is in backorder due to the HD), but anyway, would it reall be cheaper to buy it, ship that out seprately and replace the stock 512mb RAM from AW? And, how easy would it be to install yourself. I am going to school as a Computer Enigineer so i can learn these things, and frankly im sad to say i know very little it seems. But how easy will it be, and will it void the warrenty?

I forgot to ask, and if so, I would want 2GB at least of memory, so which is best to purchase?

Thanks

I do not know as much information about laptops as I do Desktops but its the same concept. First off yea it should be easy. You will need to find out if your motherboard supports 2GB of ram which I'm sure it does, once you know you motherboard supports 2GB of ram you need to order the correct type. I would suggest the same type of ram that came with your computer. The cheapest way would probably be to buy two 1GB sticks of ram and then I think there will even be two more slots open so actually you could keep the 512MB of ram in that came from AW.

cheers,

Alienware, unfortunately has a high mark-up on their RAM.

It's ~$380 to upgrade to the 2gb through them, whereas if you do it aftermarket through newegg most 2gb upgrades run ~$160-170 shipped.

I just purchased these from newegg on Monday, I received them in 2 days later: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220078

As far as installation goes... while I haven't installed the two chips above yet, since my New Alienware is in phase 5, I have installed RAM chips on my older Dell laptop. It's a very easy and simple process. Just a matter of unscrewing a hatch on the bottom of the comp, removing the old chips, and sliding in the new ones.

Will it void the warranty? I'm not sure about that to be honest. Perhaps if you ever had to send the comp back to AW you may want to reinsert the original mem... ?

Anyway... the bottom line is that you'll be saving approx $200 dollars with this aftermarket upgrade.
