Hi Guys

Im a newbie here my first post....

Basically Im getting a replacement from Dell, Should I wait for this new thing or not.

Firstly could someone please tell me exactly what will be the difference from a 2.16 Core duala dn this memrom. Is this just a newer processor?

Also, If I do hold it back a bit How long before it comes out, in your opinions is theremuch point?

Thanks guys

Merom is a new 64 Bit processor, but when exactly it is going to appear on Dell Computers is still a ???.

In my opinion the only thing worth waiting for but we are talking about 6 months here, is the new generation of DX Video Cards.

I think dell would start selling core 2 notebooks by the end of this month, if not then september, its only a few weeks away so I'm going to wait before i purchase

If you want a C2D for a M1710 it might not be a good choice. The reason I say this because of all be benchmarks that have been done. All concluded that there is very little gain for the gaming machine. The best choice is use it with the M90 where this laptop is designed to take full advantage of the C2D. I know there are some M and E series that have had bios updates to support the new C2D same thing as the Merom, but they are designed to do alot of multimedia apps ect. The M1710 is capible of doing such things but Dell look at it this "way it's made for gaming". So my suggestion is don't what for the Merom (C2D) to comeout unless you have to have that latest greatest tech. Also like dave-p wrote it has the 64bit support. I hope this helps you.

Core 2 Duo is awesome for crunching numbers (compressing, virus scanning, mathematical calculations, etc.) but shows much less performance gain in video and graphics operations. You would be better off getting a Turion 64 X2 for graphics.

This is incorrect. Core2 Duo (i.e. Merom) spanks X2's and all AMDs for that matter at this point. I don't mind advice but please make sure it is correct information you are passing on.

Ok I see...

But will the Dual core 2 processor be slower than the memrom if both machines have 2GB...?

Thanks guys I really appreciate your help.

The thing is I don't really want to wait but If you guys say theres a difference or it is worth it I will take your advice both ways....

Thanks Guys!

First, its spelled Merom not Memrom. Second, Merom and Core 2 Duo are the same thing.

To clarify, the M90 laptop is designed to handle hard multimedia 3D, CAD, and ect, so the M90 will take full advantage of the Core 2 Duo code name Merom. The reason I say that the M90 was designed for the C2D because the full potential of the M90 has been bottleneck with the Core Duo. With the 4mb cache on board this opens the M90 at is best.

LOL Sorry!

Ok so if core 2 Duo are the same thing then the Dell webiste says this http://www1.euro.dell.com/content/pr...hs1&l=en&s=dhs
Then this http://configure.euro.dell.com/dells...pn_xps_m1710_2

So its not core 2 Duo...is it?

Thanks

Only difference that I'm aware of between the M90 and 1710 is the video card and different chassis. That said the video card in the M90 is basically the 7900 GTX or GS with Open GL optimized drivers for CAD etc.

So I don't see how you feel the M90 takes full advantage of the Core 2 Duo.

You can assume, odds are that people with the M90 are more likely to be running CAD or other intensive apps so they will see more advantages from the Core 2 Duo. Other than that it has nothing to do with the M90 itself.

Your right it isn't Core 2 Duo. Wait a few days and it should be an option though.

Ok

So what do you guys think will I see a difference in speed with 2GB RAM?

if you are going to ge ta powerful machine like the M90/1710 it would be prudent to get the 2GB of RAM since you are probably going to exceed 1GB of usage at some point..unless you are just using it for web surfing

Hi guys, this is my first post on notebookforums.com!

Just a quick clarification for those people still confused - Intels naming scheme for current processors:

Core Duo
Mobile version: Yonah

Core 2 Duo
Mobile version: Merom
Desktop versions: 2mb cache - Allendale, 4mb cache - Conroe
Server platform: Woodcrest (will be called Xeon on the box though, not core 2)

Do you have any link ? Conroe version of Core 2 Duo is superior, but I couldn't find any apple to apple comparison between Merom & Turion X2. Still Waiting for Anandtech as they said they acquired a notebook with Turion X2 and will do the benches shortly.

I don't really think this new Merom will do much for M1710 users, because we are mainly gamers and processor will not do much good... The game hasn't yet code for dual core 64 bit processor...

I will hold down until the new DX10 came out. By then, the games probably will code for support on dual cores and 64bit...
