i5100 Processer Questions

Oh, I know it's a hot brick, but it gets the job done and I don't have the money to buy a better laptop right now. I have had overheating problems with it in the past, and still continue to bit by bit. I have to open it up about every 2 weeks, and clean the heatsink, the (pos)-coolingunit, and the fan, still leaving me at around 56 degrees at idle proccesser usage.

I am also using the most up-to-date bios. My first question is if there is any possible way to underclock the 5100, so perhaps it would run a bit cooler.?

An interesting story to tell about my 5100 is that for months at a time starting back in Januarary, I began to have problems turning it on. The bios lights would indicate either a memory problem or a motherboard problem. For months I troubleshooted trying to solve my problem. The B slot in the ram bay is no longer of any use, leaving me with just slot A, and for a while I found that I could only turn the computer on if I took out the ram in slot A and put it back in. I would say about 50 percent of the time this would work... Eventually not even that would solve my problem, but as I was playing around with it one day, making sure everything was making contact.
While the ram bay was open, and I had the comptuer in my lap. I pushed ever so slightly on the outer corner of the ram stick, instantly the comptuer made it into the bios, and this leaves me with my soloution from now on when I have to turn on my computer.....

Lastly my final question is that. Why is it when I run simple games, that are designed to run on a 200mhz computer, use 100% of my processer speed (it's a 2.8ghz), making my temp go up to 72-73 degrees and scaring me? I have all the right drivers installed, it doesn't make any sense to me why it uses so much of the processer.

Most of those older games are coded poorly and eat up CPU time like a fat kid eats candy. Just the way they are is all.

As for your CPU it sounds like you're running a Prescott P4. You CAN get a Northwood and swap it out. Northwood CPUs are alot cooler than a Prescott.

Would anyone by chance know of a way I could limit the processer usage to these progams?

Perhaps, I will try it with the task manager, in changing the priorities.

I'm open to suggestions.

Nothing you can do about it, not even switching priorities (which you SHOULDN'T DO)

Does anyone have any ideas what I could do about what I have to do inorder to turn on this i5100?

It is quite annoying to have to open the ram bay everytime I want to turn the computer on. I don't understand either why pushing on the ram is what works. I dont see any soldering points.

I'm open for suggestions.

in fact I think there is something u can do.I have the comp in my sig running A03 bios.Using Fn+Z+R I can ged into a menu that controls the fans on bios level.Another thing you can do there is giving you CPU a percent of free cycles sometning like throttling when it is not needed it says ICH CPU THROTTLE....%.As far as I remmember bios A 06 does not support this feature.I use it with when playing old games or when speed is not that important and I want to run the comp cooler
