uhhhhggg.. this is starting to really get to me... Order my Malx on May 23rd. Over 3 months later and im only in phase 5. I dont get how AW has any return customers when they pull this shit. They take your money as fast as they possibly can, and then make excuse after excuse as to why they can produce the product. Im not gonna cancel or anything like that, but this is getting rediculous.

Man these 19/20.1inch laptops are most vulgar.

Its the grosses display of power for anything mobile.

I cant wait for your reviews

Crazy Larry that is simply awesome on your custom cooler.

Hello. I am considering purchasing an mALX laptop with my online poker winnings and I had some questions for people who have it. Like with the respawn disc, is it really an exact image of the laptop as it leaves the factory or is it generic disc with a bunch of drivers that you have to load in order semi-manually? When deciding on hard drive, will I really notice any difference between the smaller 7200rpm drive compared to the larger 5400rpm drive? Are there any coupon codes to save money? I read that past customers of alienware can receive a 10% discount on upgrade parts so should i order my mALX with 1gig ram and then call back and order another gig cheaper? I have more questions but i'm sleepy.

thank you
It is it. I have it but it sucks. You get a windows disc and a drivers disc so there is pretty much no reason for you too get that crap.
So for example if you wiped your hard drive after you recieved your mALX and went through the alien respawn recovery, it wouldn't be the same as it was when you first powered it on after taking it out of the box? (ie. icons, any tweaks, wallpaper, etc)

I guess I'm asking because i'm deciding if I need a 3rd party imageing software package instead.

Mine came with four disc. Windows recovery, drivers, PowerCinema, and NeroExpress.

I also have a respwan kit and it just restores everything too factory status. So if you use this one it pretty much makes everything back too how it was when you got it.

IMHO it really isnt worth that much for it.

I decided to call them up and mike from ALX tech support told me it is an actual image of each system as it leaves the store and it can even generate updated images on request which I think is pretty cool and definately comes a long way from the old days of a windows cd and a master cd with just a bunch of directories with multiple drivers for multiple systems.
Its an actual image of the machine when it left the factor. Now there have been some problems with some of the disks. Mine worked fine but 357Magnum's didn't work at all. *shrugs*

lgriffin, I just ordered mine so we can share in the waiting game and comfort each other. In the meantime, have you found a good laptop cooler yet because in another thread someone suggested the Spire Pacific Breeze Notebook Cooler and I'm going to get 2 of them and try them out because this will most likely sit on my desktop in my bedroom most of the time in an ON state.

Obryan, honestly I'm probably not the best person to ask because, well, I just bought one! But in all seriousness, I found when playing the waiting game, you vs. technology, technology wins. I guess thats why I never look at stuff after I bought it because I only get disappointed.

I have the spare cash to blow on this because I'm using money I made from sportsbetting and poker but if I had to work a real job and earn it slowly I too probably would hold out for as long as I could because everytime something new comes out, prices for older stuff drop. But it really does boil down to you and your financial and geeky situation. I've mellowed a bit in the gaming dept. so I no longer have that "itch" i used to when it comes to upgrading video cards and spec's just to give me a better edge at a game every 6 months.

I don't know your situation but if you're hardcore and poor (like most people), you probably shouldn't bother with this laptop and instead build yourself a really nice desktop PC from scratch and select a motherboard that'll allow you to expand upon later on down the line and stuff like that. That's what I used to do. Still do, but in moderation now. If you can afford that route AND this laptop, then welcome to the club brother! Grab a seat and lounge with us!

I hope my vagueness helps, good luck.

SpecialAgentBill, Glad to see you on board. I'm getting pretty anxious over here, as I'm sure alot of other preorder peoples are. To answer your question, I'll be using this machine 1.) On my desk for working during the day and 2.) On the couch while my wife watches television. For that, i'm a big fan of passive coolers, and planning on getting a 18 Inch Lapinator Plus. I have one of these things for my Inspiron XPS Gen2, which is a pretty large notebook, and i'm using it right now. It keeps the heat pretty managable, it's not perfect, but there's no plug or extra crap or fans, instead it has 3M insulation material and padding and such, but it's comforable and the thing has lasted for the past year doing nightly 4 hour gaming sessions of EQ2. I'd recommend it it for that usage, but I have no idea what to do for a desk type situation. Why do you need extra cooling if the laptop will be on a hard surface?

I live in a crappy apartment with crappy air conditioning and I also smoke crappy cigarettes.

i am also looking at the sager equivalent for almost 2k less just wont have 2 harddrives but you pick up the tv tuner card with remote and bluetooth integrated etc. i have the money to go either way but i know from talking to the tech group at alienware the new version should be released around 2 months with first definate upgrade being 20 in monitor, dual core processor amd x2 etc.. they also told me the case is going to be different so the current malx will not be upgradable to new processor due to the mother board change and lay out change, he would not go into specifics though.

ps: today i am phase 1 of what will seem like a lifetime!!! AW builders suck hehehe
post #56 of 108
Obryan, you never know, maybe around mid-late oct when your (and mine, come to think of it) mALX is being finalized, give the people at AW a phone call and find out how far are we away from the new mALX and if it isn't too much longer, could cancel your order and place it for the new one... I guess waiting a long time while the system is built has SOME advantages afterall!

Spcial Agent - might I suggest you use some of that poker money to buy quality cigs...those crappy ones aren't good for you

btw...good post about why you chose your MALX...sounds like you'll have some fun with it!
Thanks shazza. Basically my situation is this.. I gamble. I admit it. I'm cool with it. But when I reach a certain amount in profit, if I don't use it to buy something, then because of bad habits, there's a very good chance I'll just loose it back in time (parlaying should be banned).

So right now I can comfortably cash out around 10 grand. So when deciding what to do with it, I narrowed it down to 3 choices..

1) a used 1998 323is modified BMW w/ 89k miles from a private seller

2) mALX laptop

3) a high definition TV set w/ home theatre like items like speakers, sub, a cute blonde (optional)

I currently own a workable automobile, a television set, and even a laptop - but no steady girlfriend (I only date girls with issues). So these things are just for pampering purposes. Atleast my insurance premiums won't go up after i get my mALX and the rewards for playing the waiting game in the high-def field are much greater than for computers in my opinion.

I think I made the right choice, I will never silence the inner geek.
Good points, Bill. You remind me of my brother!

It would have been a tough choice for me...the new TV with an Xbox 360 would also be a nice set-up...but I do agree the TV world is changing as fast/or faster than the computer world.

Anyone else heard anything about this? I'd hate to purchase such an expensive laptop and then turn around only 2 months later and it's successor has been released. I know a better one will eventually come along, but I can wait a couple more months if need be.
