Peer to Peer and file sharing

Thread Starter
What is the best way to transfer files from my laptop to my desk top? I was told that as long as both systems are running windows XP, all I have to do is plug the network cards toghether with a network cable. Is this true? What about the FastLynx USB bridge? I'm going to be moving a lot of big video and high res pictures so speed will be kind of important.
Also, will I be able to accese the web connection and files on my desktop from my laptop if I buy the stuff to use the wireless card that coming in my 8600?
I used to work for for a company that set up networks for schools so I know a little bit about networks, but those where very large and exensive systems and that was also about 12 years ago. They were just starting to use CAT 5 wire. I don't know much about how to set up a wireless system or how to transfere files. If there are any informitive sites or articals that you would recomend, please let me know. Thank you

You can't use regular CAT5 to hook up network two computers without a router/switch, you'll need CAT5 crossover. I've never actually had to use it so I couldn't tell you about its application.

Otherwise, you can get transfer software.

This is your best bet.

Yup, this is correct, you'll need a CAT5 crossover cable. Once you've done that, give each machine an IP address (192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 are easy enough for the task), then just set up file sharing on one or both computers, and you can transfer across as normal.
