Should I buy the DV8000T now? - Page 2

hey 'scurist, nice headsup on the 3yr warranty only being $122 on the costco site, but when all is said and done it would still cost an extra $30 if i ordered thru costco, that and waiting another 2 weeks or so(hard because school is starting and im very impatient). I know costco's return policy is awesome just in case i have the keyboard problem with my laptop, but how would HP handle the issue, if i got problems, could i simply return it to them right away? the only other laptop im considering is the 9000z(i like the overall features and design of the hp's), but someone who just recieved theirs has stated that it DOESN't have hdmi, that and its higher price tag make it hard to acccept, but gosh it looks soo sleek....

HP will accept your return, but the keyboard will still have the same problem. From what I hear, it's a software issue, not a hardware issue. So HP should be releasing a new driver for that. In fact, just recently, HP has uploaded many new drivers for the dv8000t. You should check it out before thinking about returning your dv8000t when problems arise.

I also read several posts that if you uninstall the Synaptics Touch Driver (touchpad driver) and use the MS Drivers, the keyboard should work flawlessly. I'm sure HP will fix it eventually through a drivers update... I did about 1-2 month of reading and visitng costco, bestbuy trying out the dv8000t. (surprisingly, those notebooks had absolutely no keyboard problems) But anyways, it's the best damn notebook for the money you pay for it. If it didn't have the keyboard problems, it would be a perfect machine. The keyboard problem is a very minor problem that can be fixed through software update. I'm sure HP is working hard to fix this as fast as they can.

The 9000z is indeed sleek... but I'd rather not get that new machine for several reasons. Anything that's new is like a BETA release of a software. It's going to have some unexpected problems, maybe something worse than the keyboard problem... who knows? And it's overpriced. I'm going to college soon and as you know, laptops are #1 theft items. That shiny black finish just says "STEAL ME FIRST! I'M NEW!" And since dv8000t is going to be replaced by the dv9000t, prices are constantly going down, thus better deal for consumers. Just my 2 cents.

Just configured a dv8000t on the Costco CTO page.
Estimated Shipping Date**:
9/6/2006

When I ordered mine, the eta for the SHIP date was the 12th, it was ordered like 11:00 PM the 2nd, got into the system the 3rd, was shipped the 7th on a FRIDAY, picked up AFTER the FED-EX cut off time @3:54pm.... and arrived MONDAY morning by 8:30am, East Coast USA... direct from CHINA.

Arrived two days before it was supposed to "ship".

On ordering a unit thru Costco, you have the option to return the unit to the store, getting ALL your money back within 180-days... Then you just re-place your order.

Or you could send it in for warranty repair thru HP at any time within that 180-days, and after.

If you order thru HP, you have 21-days that HP will "work" with you (them "maybe" sending you a new system) After the 21-days they aren't going to swap the unit out.

HP will NOT swap out a system if it's DOA if bought from anyone but them. They will tell you to take it back to whatever store you bought it from.

Another option is just walking into a Costco Store and buying one off the shelf, they do have the dv8000t in stock (at least at my Costco)... And if there's something wrong just exchange it locally.

There is also a bios update that may fix the keyboard "problem"...

Does costco refund you on the 3-year extended repair service package?

thx for the help guys but as of now, my order is cancelled. just cant pass up core 2 duo on the e1705 that dell released today!

If it's bought thru Costco.com I would assume so, but you need to check with them to confirm.

Really if you think about it, it's just like adding a extra battery , or option to the order.... If you returned the extra battery you'd get your money back, so why would the option for the EW be any different? If you think in depth on this some more, returning a unit with the EW added in is really LESS of a LOSS than the money given back on "extra" hardware... Since the EW is nothing more than the serial number being entered into HP's database as having an EW.

BTW: I found out the other day for Costco to get credited back from HP that the unit needs to have a "problem"..(NON-SALEABLE). If not and you just "return it" for no real reason, (I.E, SALEABLE) Costco sells it to a Salvage Company for about 30-40 cents on the dollar and they take the loss.... So make sure you state the unit has a "problem". (NON_SALEABLE)
(example, the keyboard messes up sometimes.)

Costco will get credited back, and HP will get the unit with the Keyboard messing up sometimes back...

PS: On that EW if bought thru HP, you only have 21-days I would assume to get your money back on that. If you call HP and they say they do, ask for it in writing as the reps will tell you anything to make the sale.

I've heard (read posts) that HP does not /has given people the run around on exchanges /returns/ taking them sweet time to credit you back on a return sometimes.

Compare that to returning a unit purchased via Costco's site, by just walking into any Costco store and saying "here", I want my money back.. and getting ALL your money back within minutes.

Hey, when you get the DELL 1705, see if you can hook it up to a BIG SCREEN TV that uses a HDMI input. Additonally I like to hear what kind of price you end up paying. (Please confiqure with BASE ram, noting how much ram of course... I say to configure with base ram as most mfg's rape you on the 2 gig upgrade.) PS: The 1705 will take (2), 2 gig memory modules for a total of 4 gig =$$$$$$ of installed ram just like the 1710 in case you didn't know...

Ah ok Furry. Spec'd out one on the web site. The new processor became availible 1 day after I ordered my HP. It made me feel a little better because the new Dell is now well beyond my price range. Around $2100 for the spec's I'd require.

I have no doubt you will have a incredible system. Just not something I can do atm. Excellent GPU they are offering on that Inspiron as well.

Isn't it amazing how these things seem to happen either just after you place your order or soon after you've decided to cancel.

As another wise poster once said, and I'm trying to take this advice. - "Once you order your laptop don't look back theres always going to be something better in a matter of weeks"

This is the way of things in the computer world. I'm sticking with my purchace. No matter how jelious I get of your new dells. lol So be it until my next laptop.. probably 4+years from now.

the deed is done. Just finished ordering the e1705 for me it just doesnt make sense not to go with the newest processor because i dont plan on upgrading anytime soon, also improved battery life makes a big difference, especially with a 17" laptop. Also the lack of dvi is huge because i will definetly be hooking my laptop to a bigger screen. But fear not my hp forum friends, i havent strayed to far, an hp media pc with core 2 duo is also making its way to me.

Furry.... Could you post some feedback on hooking up the Dell-1705 to a BIG SCREEN TV that uses a HDMI input.
i hooked up my e1705 with the 7900gs to a 55" 1080i hdtv and the results were amazing! I used a dvi-to-hdmi cable and using the nvidia wizard i was setup in less then a minute. I watched some 1080i trailers and imax videos off my laptop and they looked really really great. The tv and laptop were both running at 1920x1200. The only thing i have left to figure out is a good way to output the audio from my laptop thru my tv's speakers,(although with a good quality file the e1705's speakers with subwoofer do a really good job with the sound and some people couldnt believe that my laptop was capable of that kind of sound output). Overall extremely happy i opted to go for the high res screen along with the dvi output. Along with media center, just hook up a remote and reciever and you have your self a portable hd media center.

Thanks furry!... been wanting to know if the 1705 would output to an HDMI enabled HDTV.

(BTW: what kind of tv /model 55 incher did you hook it up to? I ask because most TV mfg's say in the manual PC connections not supported, Do not hook up to a tv set, or wording something to that effect..)
sony kdf-55xs955 . Im not sure what my manual says, but it seems to be working fine for me. Also i think the warning stems from keeping stationary image on the screen for a long time or something to that effect.

Stationary image warning I believe is left over from the crt projection sets.... I think they put that "warning" in there so they aren't swamped by "support" calls... (In your case you said it only took a minute to set it up, but on allot of boards I've read post after post, after post of people having problems, trying all kinds of resolutions to get a PC and a TV to "talk" to each other. ) PS: Thanks for the model number...

Whatever happened to the ol' dv8000t? I don't see any 8000's listed on hp's site, nor any dual-HD machines for that matter. Anything to do with the dual-channel memory not working?

HPs entire line was updated with the release of the Core 2 Duo chip. The dv9000 replaced the dv8000 and the dv6000 replaced the dv5000.
