Convince A Dell Fan To Buy A Sony

Thread Starter
Every notebook that I have bought has been a Dell. I thought this time I would try something new. When I looked at the prices of some of the Sony laptops from their site they seemed far more expensive compared to similar Dell laptops.

Could someone please convince me why I should choose Sony over Dell. For those who own a Sony laptop, what made you decide to buy from them?

Sony is geared more towards the multimedia user & focuses more on visual appeal. There are plenty of 3rd party vendors that sell Son'y for decent prices, I'm sure somone in here can point you in the right direction

HP is eating Dell's lunch, and Sony is crap. Buy HP, that's what I'm doing in 6 mo.

If you are going to make a comment like that at least bother to back it up, either that you just look like a troller

...Overall according to HP customers (as well as Compaq- since they are the same Company) they are one of the worst in overall quality & satisfaction according to a 2005 cnosumer poll of 35,000 laptop users. Here are the results of that survey

Just about any avid PC user knows that Compaq/HP are having serious QC issues right now (which that are trying to resolve)

I avoided Sony because of the "Sony Style" image bothered me, I all about function not looks. In the end though I couldn't ignore the features of the SZ160 so I gave it a try. Several months later it was mine, at the time it had everything I wanted/needed in a laptop.

At work I use of many diff laptops, the best IBM/Lenovos, Panasonics, Dells, Fujitsus, Macs, Blah, blah, yadda they are all fun but not as the SZ160.
Now there are also several other new Sony models in our lab but they don't do it for me. Maybe the one you want is going to suck? I would play with the top picks on you list of machines for several weeks/months and pic the best, CONVINCE YOURSELF.

EDIT: by the way, the one HP in our lab really sucks a$$, more than the Gateway. (^_^)~HaHaHa

I own both Sony and Dell, new laptops, and I know whereof I speak.

Heh...You just don't research at all do you? THe ACSI rating is purely based on Customer Support Satisfaction. It does not take into account the quality of products that are offered. If you researched a little you would see that HP/Compaq still have scores lower than Dell's ASCI score 73/67 respectively.

As far as quality, refer to this link again: http://www.pcworld.com/zoom?id=118514&page=3&zoomIdx=1

That editorial that you just posted was focused on the Sony battery recall. it said on how Dell MIGHT be in trouble.

HP/Compaq fall in last place as far as quality of their machines. As I stated before, they are working on it but it will take them time, especially with the purchase of Compaq.

AS far as your problems with Sony, I would expect they would fix those items for you if they are within Warranty.... I know this is hard to believe but some people have more acidic persperation (sweat) that can cause the paint to fade. I've owned 1 sony laptop as well as a ton of Dell's and none of them have the palm rests fading. I would ask Sony to replace the Bezel..I even owned a HP z8060 but sold it after I had it for a month, I just didn't care for it.

I have a Gateway/Emachines Laptop.....the hinges cracked in 3 months and it creeks all over, would never buy one agian. Oh and I bought it 1 1/2 years ago and their still useing the same platform with $hitty hinges (Go look at the Gateway forum...theres a sticky with like a million posts about it)

I have a dell e1705 with a 512mb 7900GTX in it...so a m1710 minus all the "Please steal me" LED bling bling. The screen on it has horrible light leekage...as do pretty much all Dell e1705's and m1710's...once agian look at the Dell forums....tons of posts about it. That in itself really sucks...but heres the part that makes me REALLY mad...Dell KNEW the screens sucked...they used them for like 2 years on the previous model and STILL put them on the new model, I doubt they even care. But at 8 lbs its on my desk plugged into my 20" external LCD 90% of the time so I'm not to upset.

I have a Sony Vaio SZ series...it is so bad a$$. The built quality is great, and it has dedicated video AND integrated being only 4 lbs. The screen is perfect. Oh and it has a broad band intenna, webcam 120gig HD. I was deciding between the SZ and a m1210....for about 3 seconds....which was about the time I looked at my e1705 screen and the top 1/2 was really dark and the bottom half was washed out. From reading on the Dell forums the m1210 has identical problems...as I said before apparently Dell just doesnt give a flying.....well you know.

So basically I'm a new Sony notebook customer.

I went from a Dell to a sony...happy with my decision, but by no means disliked the Dell. Dell made a really solid machine, well built, good materials, great customer service, great sound, cool running, and a totally sub-par screen. I was tired of the exchange game. Although in Dell's favor, getting an exchange out of them is pretty easy.

Had been thinking about an AR...so was able to make a trade for one. My first laptop was a Sony that I managed to flog for a solid 4 1/2 years with the only problems being a hard drive replacement at 2 years, and cracked LCD hinges after about 3 1/2..which I didn't think was bad. My impressions of the Sony after a couple months is that the build quality is definitely not as good as the Dell. The Dell just had a very solid feeling, everything fit well, nothing loose, no creaks, very rigid. But, the build quality on the Sony is not bad either, I would say acceptable, just feels a little more delicate. The screen on the Sony, while not being as high in resolution as the Dell, is worlds better than the Dell screen in terms of image quality, and evenness in lighting, no comparison. It's far brighter as well. The Dell was hard to see in some situations during the day with the backlight all the way up, while the Sony is almost blinding at night on max....this means you can see the screen in the daytime no matter what, which I like. The keyboard on the Sony is also far better than the ultra stiff, loud "clicky" keys on the Dell. I have yet to deal with Sony's customer support other than to ask a warranty related question (about transfers) which was answered quickly, and the rep was pretty nice. Overall though, the Sony just has a really alluring character (sounds lame, yea) that makes me want to polish it like a fine automobile. heh

Not sure if you're thinking about an SZ, which seems to be the most popular Sony model these days. If it were between an SZ and an M1210, I know I would take the SZ anyday. The SZ is a super slick machine, and the dual graphics idea is great. (if only they could combine the 7900GTX with the Intel GMA 950 ) M1210 has it's good points, but I can't get past the fact that it looks as though it was designed by the same team that designed those Emerson clock radios in the 80s. I know some people love the appearance though, i guess it's subjective.

Edit: OH! And the Dell forum here at notebookforums is MUCH MUCH more exciting than the Sony forum. That's what I miss most about the Dell. SolApathy..good to see someone from the other area.

YEah the Dell brightness was an issue on the older models. the newer ones are 30% brighter (and it shows)

The Dell forum deffinetly moves alot faster...but if you look at them most of the subjects are "My blue tooth is messed up" "My screen is totally messed up" "I don't have any sound!"

So either Sony's are just that much better that thy put more time/money into their laptops or their just that 133t To be honest though....for every 100 laptops I see through the day maybe 1 or 2 are a sony..and thats on the high side, somedays I don't see any besides my own of course.

...thank god I was not drinking anything when I read that

Ok...Why don't you take of the blinders for a second & look around...I know it's hard to concieve but there are other forums available besides NBF...I know this is hard to believe but perhaps Sony laptop users are using a different forum? (some people really scare me with comments like those). Makes me wonder if the view the world in the same way...

Well there aren't many large forums for laptops, maybe 5? None of them are very active, prolly because alot of people dont buy sony since they usually dont sell $499 laptops like Dell.

While there are not that many "dedicated" laptop brand specific forums there are thousands of all-purpose computer forums that offer PC advice.

Sony is more about "style" and like you said they don't mass sell the $499 laptop as Dell does. They don't offer a really high-end laptop either. they focus on a multimedia based machine that looks cool & is light weight.
Just an observation - I think the $499 laptop point is sort of irrelevant as posts from buyers of the low cost B series are almost nonexistant. Maybe this only reflects forum activity and not actual sales. My impression though is that the overwhelming majority of Dell sales is for the E series and XPS machines...just taking into consideration home sales and not business. There's no question that specs for specs Dell is priced slightly lower, but I don't think the price difference is that large.

About Sony offering a high end laptop...seems like the AR170/190 models are available with the same specs as a top line XPS, with the exception of the GPU and 7200rpm HD. In fact the Sony's specs include available dual hard drives, integrated TV tuner, and HD optical drive (Blu-Ray) which the Dell doesn't even offer. Dell already has the Core 2 Duo's, but the Sony's are on their way with that. I guess ultimately it depends on one's definition of "high-end". Same goes for the portables like the SZ. I think the Sony's might actually be even a little more high end spec wise compared to Dell's offerings in that category.
Kg, thats why I said they are more multimedia based The 7600GT (which is the max option for sony) can't even begin to compare with the 7900GTX's level of perfomance. That & the lack of a 7200RPM drive option are the main reasons I don't really consider the Sony as having a "high-end" option.

As far as the smaller, more compact "elite laptops" as I like to call them I think Sony takes the cake. They really shine in that area & Dell can't compete with them on that side in my opinion, though the smaller 1210 does offer a dedicated Nvidia 7400 option.
The reason there is no to little activity with the "$499" laptops is because the people who by them don't care about them at all so they never go on forums

What kinda sucks about the 1210 tho is that it is just a tad smaller than the SZ series and is a pound heavier with smaller screen and the SZ even has 2 GPU's...allthough I doubt the Intell "extreme" graphics adds much...but still. My main selling points on the SZ was the Hybrid graphics, style, and Sony's quality.
give you an idea, extreme graphics -950 you are looking at a 3Dmark05 score around 550-750

7400Go w/turbocache for the 1210 runs aorund 1900-2100 in 3DMark05 so there is a bit of difference
