linux, i think, theoreticaly does what you want it to do, and with enough work is supposed to squeeze every ounce of power out of your machine....and its diferent.

What it does to a notebook...IDK

If you're a newbie... you need to stay away from Linux.

Linux is an operating system. If you want to "try" Linux WITHOUT installing the OS to your hard drive you can download a copy of Knoppix, burn it to cd/dvd, stick it in your dvd drive, reboot... and boot into Linux.
(Knoppix being a "version" of Linux.)

So far as your other questions, what Linux will do... Linux will probally run faster, crash less, (once you get it set-up with your hardware) and there are tons of FREE apps out there. Another plus to Linux over Windoz, is "if" there is a problem, or a custom app is needed there are thousands of fans of Linux around the world that code, write programs 24/7... Problem pops up with Linux and you have 100,000 people from around the world working on that problem... Windoz on the other hand only putting manpower on a problem if it is widespread...

Basiclinux is a small Linux version that can be run off of a 2floppys with a laptop with limited memory and hd space. It is a good teaching tool and has good support with a good amount of archives of questions that can be learned from.

Lots of info about Linux and a forum supporting just that in the links I posted above. FYI: Linux is a totally differant world than Windoz...

load the website and it will tell you how to do the 2 floppy setup. It is designed to work with windows initially to get the floppy's setup

Got a TIP for "help im a noob" List the computer you're talking about... So people can give you the CORRECT advice. Doing so also will save people from wasting time suggesting this, or that. With the below computer, Windows 98SE (second edition) would be a "better" option than ME. ME is sort of the bastard child of MS... Linux would also be a good option... "IF" you can devote allot of time into learning the in's and out's... Linux would probally run faster... http://www.notebookforums.com/post2376728.html

Keep your eyes peeled, and visit shopping sites like slickdeals and you might find a new machine for ~$400. Here is a brief rundown on what will happen if you try to use this machine - Time spent reinstalling WinMe, getting drivers, etc... $ Search for a Network / Wireless card Start surfing the web and realize it is sloooow $$ Search for Memory to help somewhat Resume surfing the web and realize it is still sloooow Try to use it for something else and realize you need disk space $$$ Suddenly that $100 became weeks of work and mucho dinero$
