S-Video port not recognised.

Ok guys, I'm starting to get mad Sager tech support have been leading me on a stupid goose chase and I've already spent almost $50 on stupid cables and converters to get my freakin' s-video port to work.

It seems as though the port isn't even recognised. I go into the ATI (9600 pro btw) Display Settings (Properties -> Settings -> Advanced -> Displays Tab) and all the other options for multiple monitors are greyed out. I got this s-vid to RCA cable and Tech Support said I needed this converter from them. So I had to buy that, which was female-female so I had to buy both a regular s-vid cable and a standard RCA cable as well. Well now I've got all that and it STILL isn't being recognised. Arrrghhh!

Is there a driver for the s-video port? I looked in Device Manager and didn't see anything that looked like s-video. And do any of you use s-video as an output with your 9600 pro? HELP!!!

click on the settings tab...do you see two boxes, a big one that says 1 on it and a smaller one that says 2 on it? If so, click on the one that says 2, so it is highlighted in blue...then click "Extend my Windows Desktop onto this monitor". If not...i'm not sure...

There isn't a port for the S-Video, its a connection to the ATI card. So it won't show up in the Device Manager, at least not directly. You need to right-click on the ATI icon in the tray, then select Settings and Device Settings, in the Display Properties Dialog, select Settings, then Advanced to get (Multiple Monitors) and MOBILITY RADEON 9xxxx Properties Dialog. Here, pick the Displays tab. This is where you will see the connection on the S-Video. It should be on the TV panel. This will give the connection or say "Not Connected". Hope that helps. I am working from a year plus old 8886 with an 9000, so some of this may not apply or could be different.

I can see the TV panel, but it's greyed out. Can't select it or access individual properties. Here's a quesion - on the 'TV panel', there is a cable that is crossed out, which clearly isn't an s-video cable. It looks to be like a serial or gaming cable. Do other people see an s-video cable in that panel? I'm thinking maybe the reason it's not letting me select the TV panel is because it's looking at a different port for this mysterious cable.

And I tried the second screen - but clicking on the Advanced tab doesn't bring up the ATI properties, so there's no "Displays" tab. I can't remember if I extended it first or not. I'll try when I get home.

Any other ideas?!?!

Is something (like a TV) plugged into the S-Video port when you see the TV Panel? I seem to recall something needs to be plugged in before it is enabled...

Yes, an S-Video cable is connected to the port. And still no luck.

You don't just need a cable in the port - but the cable needs to be attached to a video display (like a TV) to get recognized.

Hmm... Well it was with the first cable I bought. It was one of these s-video -> RCA converter things. And that one WAS hooked up to the tv. No luck. So sager tech support said I had to buy this converter from them if I wanted to go from S-vid to RCA (my TV's all only have RCA in for video), so I bought it and an s-video cable and still no luck... saying that, I haven't pluged the other end into the tv cos I don't have a RCA -> RCA cable yet - it's on it's way. I guess I just try it when I get the cable. This is way to frustrating...

In the Dispalys tab for ATI ,the TV should have a button underneath that says Troubleshoot. Put a checkmark in 'Force dectection of my TV'. Try using the first setup where it was connected using the S-Video to RCA connection. Normally you can not manipulate the setting unless the Laptop detects a connection. As soon as the Laptop sees the connection you should see 2 extra button under the Laptop and TV.

What ATI card do you have? I have the 9600 pro and I don't recall seeing that option. I'll double check again though when I get home. It's tough not being able to try suggestions out as I get them.

Any other ideas? Anyone?!

!!

Ok, thanks for all your help guys. I finally got it sorted! The problem *was* that I didn't have it connected to the TV - I did the first time, with the s-video -> rca cable, which means Sager tech support were right (yet again). And I *did* have to extend the desktop to the second monitor, then after applying that and restarting, I could access the ATI settings on it (which has that all important Display tab).

I'm just glad I finally got it figured out - even if it was pretty expensive.

Well, that's good, glad it worked out in the end. Hopefully, others will be able to read this and avoid the circus.

Right,

I have a s-video cable with four pins on each end. I also have a svideo to scart converter which connects the cable to the tv. Everything is plugged in. But nothing is working.

I've been messing around with the settings in the display menu as outlined above in previous posts. I am able to force the detection of the tv (bottom left of the four options) and get Pal-I (I am UK based) and 1280*1024 but don't get the two blue buttons beneath this information, as is the case with the panel option (top right - the laptop screen).

I save this as a scheme and return to the display properties menu. The 2 screen (tv) is still greyed out and when I select the extend desktop option, the tick appears. I apply the change and the screen flicks black for a moment and on reappearing, the 2 screen (tv) is still greyed out. Throughout all of this there is no change at all with the tv set (just blank screen).

When returning to the display tab in the "(Multiple Monitors) and Radeon Mobility 9600" menu the resolution and Pal-I information under the tv heading is gone.

I'm all out of ideas to make this work. Do any of you lot have a tip or two. I haven't yet contacted Sager as I wnat to try and sort this myself, but will send them this next week if I can't get it sorted.

Oh yes, Omega 2.5.04 drivers

A glass of electronic beer to anyone who can help me sort this out.

I'm also having the same problem. I've tried what was posted earlier where he said he got it to work, still not working for me. I have hooked up with an svideo cable into the svideo port on my tv. The laptop just isn't recognizing the connection. I'd really like to get this thing to work. Hopefull somebody has a solution or just anything that can get it to work at this point.

mrdekker and and BucsJosh, I got mine to work by buying a special converter from Sager that goes from s-video to RCA. You'd think s-video to s-video wouldn't need a converter to be recognised. mrdekker, did you have everything plugged in securely and the tv turned on? As for the scart, there may be a special connection for that too. Like I said, I bought a standard S-video to RCA cable and it didn't work - I *had* to get the converter from Sager. Try giving them a call.... er, or rather having them call you.
