Your dvd-drive

E1705/M1710/M90 owners, do you know what dvd burner model sits in your notebook? I would like to know so I can check if it is region locked, and if software can bypass it. There are some rpc-2 (region locked) drives that cannot be bypassed by software or ripping utilities today. It means there is no way you can watch your dvd's from different regions, which is very bad.

Thanks guys. I have checked this drive and it is region locked, but there exists rpc-1 firmware to remove it and make life easier for multi region dvd owners. Also, playing/ripping tools should work.

I was worried it was one of the Matshita drives, heavily used in today's Apple computers. These drives are impossible to deal with once you have used your 5 times to play different region dvd's. It will be locked to your last picked region permanently without solution to counteract it.

I use a program called AnyDVD does this without flashing the firmware.

Sorry for being such a n00b but what does "region locked" mean?

Each DVD-Video disc contains one or more region codes, denoting the area[s] of the world in which distribution and playback are intended. The commercial DVD player specification dictates that a player must only play discs that contain its region code. In theory, this allows the motion picture studios to control the various aspects of a release (including content, date and price) on a region-by-region basis. In practice, many DVD players allow playback of any disc, or can be modified to do so. Entirely independent of encryption, region coding pertains to regional lockout, which originated in the video game industry.

Yes, fortunately this is possible on most region locked drives, except the Matshita ones (and a few other exotic ones) I mentioned ealier.

No problems with this one either.

I had a panasonic (Matshita) drive once, the region code is kept in an area not addressable by any firmware patch...

AFAIK this is the only make that do this and Dell don't use these drives.
