Interesting Theory

Do you guys think that the Upgradeable Videocard that Dell speaks of for the XPS will be the M11 PRO w/ 256mb ??? The idea's been bugging me for a while and I'm just throwing a bone to see if any of you think this as well. Thanks

Considering the rumors that an upgrade apparently will be available by May/June or so, this actually seems to make sense from the viewpoint of what ATI would be offering by then -- but it doesn't make sense in terms of a performance benefit (maybe 5% boost in 3D performance, but that's probably all you'll see).

Remember, you have 1 year to do the upgrade and it's a one time deal. I plan to wait until the year is almost up. Hopefully, maybe, per chance, possibly, here's to hoping, the M12 may be offered.

My thought is that the May/June time could be for the nVidia card????? I just can't see ATI putting another card out before alot of companies have adapted to the current one. From the way things are going, it'll be April before the current one is shipped in the majority of computers (and even mid March on the Dells). There will be alot of PO'ed ATI Customers if they get their brand spanking new, top of the line 9700 card just in time to see the new one hit the market (regardless of the little performance upgrade)

The reason that I think so is because Sager's new beast 8790 comes with the 256 DDR RAM ATI 9700, I'm guessing that card isn't availble yet because I'm sure if it was, dell would have thrown it into their XPS. So its been bugging be kinda. Even that go-l will have 256 ati 9700. SO I'm hoping whatever dell plans to do, it ends up being a better card than the M11 which it already comes with.

On another note, that 1 year upgrade thing is only valid for the card that is being released in May/June because it says that after the new card is out, they will ship it with the XPS/9100 I'm assuming. SO I don't think it matters how long you wait for it, I doubt you have much choice in the matter, its not like Alienware

From the Canadian upgrade FAQ:

Q How long will I have to upgrade my Inspiron XPS graphics card?

A Customers will have one year from the date of purchase to take advantage of this special graphics card upgrade program.

Actually there may be another alternative. Apparently NVIDIA is coming out with another version of its Go5700 the Go5700 Ultra (think 9600 and 9600Pro), so it might be that chip.

If you want it to be worth it, you'd do yourself good to upgrade near the end of the 1 year... then your laptop is worth it's most...

haha that sounds about right but still if there is only 1 choice of a card to upgrade to, it won't make much of a difference

FYI, It actually never states the May/June card is the one you have to use. They state it is one time only, any you have a year from the purchase date to take advantage of this, so if a year from now they have a better model that fits, you will most likely be able to use the new card. It also states they can change this at any time, so my comment is really just sheer speculation.

Edit 1 - Sorry for just repeating what AV8ing said, I didn't read the "Quote" on his page because I thought it was a forum quote.
Sooooo, what AV8ing said....

This is true, and from my standpoint, if that one choice in nVidia, I will probably stick with the ATI (just personal preference). Then again, after that year is up, if the M12 fits, you can pay to have them do it or do it yourself. Myself I not banking anything on upgradable graphics until I see it happen on the XPS, it'd be nice but I'm not banking on it. Unless there is a big, big performance difference in a new card, I will probably wait more like 2 years and then see if I can upgrade, or stick with the 9700

Nvidia has the NV36 refresh somewhere aroudn that time frame everyone talks about

dell is going to call it the Geforce 5750 Go
