A Question about Build Quality

Hi, I've been doing some research about what laptop to get for college. I would like one with solid build quality, and am currently considering the following models:
Asus S96J/Z96J
Asus F3JM
Compal Hel-80
Dell Latitude D820
HP nc8430

And, to a lesser extent, HP dv5000t/dv6000z and Lenovo 3000 N100.

I wanted to know how these laptops compare, build quality-wise. Any help is appreciated!

As far as that list is concerned I have only had any experience with some dells and asus models. The Asus by far has the best quality imho. Dell has had some issues in the past (4 million batteries recalled) among some other things that turn me off to them. As far as the others are concerned I don't have much to say.

such sweeping generalizations...

dell isn't bad in all sectors. their business models can be quite good. and the battery issue isn't a build quality issue. it wasn't even their fault- as apple also purchased sony batteries- and they are taking responsibility for it.

i think you need to hit the search button for each model for specific review/pictures, and anecdotes on purchases to find your answer. otherwise you'll continue to get sort of unhelpful generalizations like the one above. research the warranties that come with those models as well, since dell provides completecare, i'd weigh that heavily over the other companies.

Thanks for your replies!

themessenger: I've already looked at reviews for each of the laptops (except the F3JM, which came out recently), especially the ones on this site and on notebookreview.com. The problem is that it's hard to compare things such as build quality and heat because each review is subjective and depends on the reviewer. Since I have yet to see the same reviewer check out two or more of the laptops I listed, I'm not exactly sure how to compare these laptops.

it's not possible to research every detail for all the products you wish to invest in. sometimes you will just have to filter out all the bias you can from reviews or accept it as fact. are there any specific complaints you read about for any models? which areas of these complaints would you least be willing to risk? if things aren't mentioned too much like heat or build quality- it might well be for the reason that they are just average and too similar from system to system to really take significance in your purchase decision. weigh the pros and cons if you can. except the second asus and maybe some of the hp's, i think there is a decent size userbase of all those models.
