what the heck are all these folders?

well, before doing a .dmg restore on my internal drive, i swore there were only like 4 folders in the main dir.

now there are all these? what are they? and why are the different ones there now after the .dmg restore?

before:

after:

why such the variation here? the "after" was done with the built in disk copy, and the "before" was done with CCC

For some reason the shortcuts to the etc, temp, and var folders aren't being hidden.

There are a lot of hidden folders and files on the root of your drive; close to 30, actually, but they're all Unix and system related so OS X hides them. I don't know why those particular folders have shortcuts in the root of the drive, however, but they are normally hidden.

This tells you how to hide them again: http://forums.macosxhints.com/archiv...p/t-51147.html

i found a way around it. doesnt really solve the hidden folder problem but,

instead of using disk utility to restore a .dmg created by disk utility, i mounted the image, and just restored it using CCC.

kinda just going "around" the issue i guess, folders are not visible after a ccc restore.
