MY 7700 is DEAD - Page 6

Thanks for the photos! They show most of what I need to know. I have two questions/clarifications please.

1) can you elaborate how to get the keyboard out? Is there some screw underneath, is it just brute force etc?

2) On pic 17, there are two fans, one partly hidden. Is the object to the left of them the battery? Will removing this reset the bios?

Glad it worked out. I was afraid that mediafire would nuke it after 24 hours.

My 7700 is still dead :-(
It's a $4500 paper weight now... has been for over a year.
I am thinking about replacing the Mobo but is it worth the $200+?
and just using it as a non-gaming laptop second computer at this point because it wont play any newer games. Or do I try to part it out?

Are you 100% sure that it is the motherboard? Or is it just a bad graphic card. If so then try to "bake" it first as you have nothing to lose.

And if that does not work, then yes, sell it in parts.

cheers ...

Dude it does not sound like you have "THE" toasted MB problem it shoulds like it is HEAT. Another flaw in the design of this laptop is the huge amounts of heat. (It is all really desktop components crammed into a laptop) It requires regular preventative maintanence....clearing the fans and vents of dust and also occasionally cleaning up the heatsinks and re-applying the thermal grease.

thanks for the reply.

The issue I have is similar to what everyone else has posted. I mentioned this earlier but it was a long time ago and those posts are gone apparently. But it started with it just shutting off out of no where, I'd be working then black screen no power. I thought it was the power connector int eh back as it is lose but when it's running I would jiggle the cord and nothing it would stay running. So one day I decided to wipe the hard drives and reinstall everything, but I can't get it to recognize the Alienware Respawn disc, and when I try to install Windows with a regular install disc it takes tricks to get it to a point that it actually begins the install. But it gets to a point and it just locks up. Funny thing is that I was able to load windows 98 on it LOL go figure... but when I try XP it locks up on me. I searched for the baking threads, looks like it worked for a few, but I am not sure if this is my problem or not?? I would clean the fans and copper heatsinks often and built a custom fan unit to sit under it to help keep it cool, so that's why I think the mobo is just dead... what do you guys think? anything else I should try to get it to load XP first or just pop it in the oven and see what happens? Thanks in advance.

Go the safe route first - try XP, and then ...

a.k.a. SUMNRSS So I have already tried to install XP that's what came with the system, thats what I can't get installed. So I was asking if there were any tricks to getting installed again. I brought up windows 98 because i was able to install that version but not XP. It's really weird whats going on. Frustrating actually. I have tried to reinstall XP like a million ways. I don't know I guess I will just bake it.

Ok Im almost at the end of my rope finally snagged a V6.1 Mother board for my Dead M7700 to replace my V5.3...after a 4 hour transplant I still have a black screen

When I start it up the DVD drive has some activity, the HD activity light flickers a bit and I hear Fans kick in then nothing just a black screen also I noticed the time on the front is moving (I think previosly it just staryed at zero) I need to figure out for sure if its Video or this new MB is also BAD.

If its the Video what is this Baking Process I have heard about in a few threads.

Baking = crazy and desperate act of putting the GPU (or the motherboard in some cases) in the oven at 375F for about 10-12 minutes.

What it does is to re-flow the soldering within the card for better contact. I think.

Check the threads and posts for personal crazy and successful tips

ghn in another post you posted the following instructions:

". card right side up flat on a tin foil
. 150C for 4 min (pre-heated oven)
. crank it up to 240C for 3 min
. turn the knob back down to 150C for 3 minutes, then turn the oven OFF
. leave the poor ding sitting in the oven with the oven door (and doors) open for at least one hour to let it totally cool down
. pray"

I have also seen ppl say to prop the card up by corners with foil balls so its not sitting flat on the foil. any other pointers?

The only time I use foil balls is when I bake the whole motherboard
