yeah so you might want to consider buying extended warranty...but did you buy it with credit card? if you bought it with credit card, you might check with credit card company to see if you have double manufacturer warranty on purchases.

as far as computers go, you are only starting school, so there ain't gonna be that much pressure on. plus you have a desktop. plus the school has computers. i wouldn't waste money on buying a lappie for the time being. yeah, you might be able to find something to tide you over with a warranty (normally a short two weeks), but you could do damage to the thing and not be able to return it and be out that money as well.

In Australia you can extend it after warranty expiration, but you have to pay a fee to have the laptop evaluated for the warranty extension. I don't see why it wouldn't be different in the states.

i'm on my account on dell.com and looking at the options i have for extending the warranty. should i do this:

Return to Depot till 8/29/2007 -- 1 year(s) [add $178]

or this one?

Complete Care till 8/29/2006 -- 1 year(s) [add $119]

are they the same thing? whats the catch? why is the complete care cheaper than the limited warranty?

thanks for all of the help so far its greatly appreciated and it has helped me drastically.

edit:

i just saw this, this seems to be the best deal if i'm going to be upgrading my warranty:

Next Business Day Onsite Plus Nights and Weekends till 8/29/2007 -- 2 year(s) [add $218]

however, til 8.29.07 is only 1 year and not 2 years like it says :-\\

did you buy with credit card? If so, you probably already have warranty through the credit card company.

second, complete care is in addition to the normal warranty. You can only get complete care if you already have complete care.

you can only buy warranty during the warranty period.

I have a 700m that died two days AFTER the one year warranty expired
Dell has a 30 day grace period to allow you to extend the warranty but after the 30 days, you have to pay an additional fee. It cost me $258.45 for two more years. But now they'll fix it. Free.

That is a whole other issue that I need help with. I will make a separate post.
