yeah i was curious last night and looked it up...
this is from their "offical site"

NetStumbler is a wireless networking Access Point discovery tool. The application simply discovers Access Points and logs associated information. NetStumbler does NOT connect you to any Wireless Networks it finds, nor does it allow you to connect to any Access Point through the user interface.

I found their site and it jsut confused me.... But I think I understand now... Why cant you use your wireless card to discover them yourself?

Thats why I specify mac addresses and change my encrypted passwords ever 3-4 weeks, because I'm worried I may have a Braingoo in my neighborhood. You can also get a program called Air Snair to detect, Urchan Braingoo's on you network and send beligerant messages to them, almost worth not protecting the network

Netstumbler is faster in the refresh (1 per fraction of a second refresh)
highest signal and lowest signal
time and date of AP detection
info of AP detected such as the vendor
It is a good util for war driving or detecting unauthorized AP's plugged in to a network
GPS capability to map out AP's

Netstumbler is a tool that allows you to detect if your neighbor has a wireless network, which upon verification of such a setup then you just access their network and "borrow" their Internet connection...goodbye $45 a month broadband charges! lmao

The util in windows is enough to do that. Netstumbler gives you a bigger picture.

be careful guys, my neighbor got caught stealing internet through another neighbors wireless network. Dude ratted him out, 2 days later the cops and 2 fbi agents showed up took him to jail, he posted bail, but got kicked outa school for violating student ethics code.....and still has charges pending

It can cross some lines and can easily be considered "hacking" in the eyes of the law. If you find that your neighbor has a wireless network that is open, do the neighborly thing by suggesting ways to secure their network, and ask to have access.

Starbucks and many other coffee houses/bars have free wireless access. How did he know that the neighbor wasn't just giving free access like Starbucks?

Was he on his own property? Was the wireless signal encrypted? What right does the neighbor have to broadcast his signal onto his property? Could that be considered tresspassing?

He must have been doing more than just surfing or accessing the internet for this kind of attention.

Actually, as long as it's no encrypted it's not illegal. At least not here. The spectrum of sound that WiFi in the B/G variants is still considered "open."

That is, there is no Federal protection for the 2.4Ghz... yet

Now if you decided to screw with someone's stuff on the open network, then you're in a world of trouble if they catch you (and taking your life into your own hands... I know a guy who has his system set to send a rather interesting program to your computer if you try to get into certain areas).

NetStumbling/Wardriving is fun, but Warspying is much more interesting

Hey if any of you guys are within 300ft of my house and want to surf on my wifi I don't care I keeep mine unencrypted because I realy dont; think there are any war drivers around here where I live and If there where I would problably know them. So if you want free interent access just park our behind my townhouse and surf to your hearts delight Iw illeven put a shared folder out there just in case you want to leach a few filee off me! I just hope nobody up loads any viruses but who would upload a virus to a network you whre gettgin free stuff from! that would be stupid.

A small number of the bigger companies offer "shared internet" services now and recommend that you go in with a neighbor to share cost and services.

........and if any of you want to log into mine, let me know, I'll open up the channels on my network. I always like to &%^$ with peoples minds. After I'm done I'll be sure to call the police and tell them there is a terrorist with an Alienware computer on our street.
