If ur OS is updated. Most likely it has been installed. I messed up when I copied the whole Boot.ini and paste it over my orignal Boot.ini file. So it was my fault. I just finished redoing what happen and was wondering is this right?

New Boot.ini file..

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer

Why is there a 2 in the () instead of a 1? BTW is there any other way of getting my old Boot.INI file?

Thanks
Anthony

Dood, I had the same problem and I said that there is a fix for it...

From 2 post ago..

Edit: I just rebooted my machine and it just reboots over and over at the Dell Bios Page. To Fix this I put in Dell Window Xp Sp2 cd in and run it. Then I press R for repair instead of reinstalling windows. Then I had to pick which windows that are available. Then the Administrator Password.. Then I put bootcfg /rebuild and press enter twice after that typed exit...

So it would look like this...Dos Style

C:\\windows\\ bootcfg /rebuild (similar)
Type : Microsoft Windows XP Professional
OS: (just press Enter)
C:\\Windows\\ exit

That should rebuild ur Boot.ini in Dos mode..

I recently updated my Thread by adding this BOOT.INI disclaimer: NOTE: The BOOT.ini that I have given was meant for an example only. I would not recommend you to copy all of it and overwrite your own, unless if you are specifically using XP Pro SP2 on the first partition of the harddrive. Everyone else (XP Home, MCE2005, OEM pre-installed it onto different partition, etc.) should just add the /usepmtimer only.

Your (2) is refering windows to load up and look for the \Windows directory in your 2nd partition.

here is my boot file, maybe it can help. Below is only 6 lines.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Media Center Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /usepmtimer

if you didn't set the admin password to anything just leave it blank and hit enter/login.

Of course, if someone is following your "step-by-step" instructions, they will have already cut and pasted according to your instructions two paragraphs earlier.

I only referred to the /usepmtimer, and to copy and paste it if u dont have it in the boot.ini..... NOT the entire boot.ini example.

Although I guess one can understand the general line of "copy and paste it".

In any case, I updated it once again to accomodate the general-ness.

I just purchased a Dell D820 with T7200 processor. The registry was set fine but the boot.ini file did not have the /usepmtimer. Is there any reason I should not add this to the boot.ini file?

As far as I know the /useptimer switch only does anything on AMD systems. Core 2 Duo being an Intel Processor I doubt it's going to do anything.
