Core Duo vs Core 2 Duo

I noticed some of you are in the same boat as me. Ordered your m5550 or other Alienware and just received it. Oh wait.. now the Core 2 Duo is being put into the notebook lines. Below is the link that compares the CPUs, so don't worry owners of the Core Duo, your CPU isn't worthless.

Thanks! I was sort of bummed when I found out about this new release, but I guess it's not too bad.

Ah... Not much to worry about there.

Besides.. I believe you can upgrade to the Core 2 Duo in the m5550 and others..

That would be a perfect way for Alienware and other vendors to make money. Upgrading your CPU, just send us your laptop or they come out. Make some cash.

The CPU is upgradeable with our motherboards, so when it comes time to upgrade, the Core 2 Duo will be cheaper. No need to do it now. LOL

Can I get an Amen!

If you aren't planning on upgrading to Vista then it doesn't matter. Vista is a different story tho. I feel a little bad for everyone who JUST ordered laptops like in the past week. Litterly one of those "outdated before it gets to the door" moments.

Looks like everyone with a core duo will be just fine.

I don't think the upgrade would be worth the cost personally. If you're buying new get it, but if you've got core duo, I wouldn't bother upgrading unless you can also greatly increase the speed of the processor also. Like if you have a 1.66 core duo, and upgrade to 2.93 merom... Upgrading from a 1.66 core duo to a 1.66 merom would be a huge waste of money.

OK, please list the reason you say that. Thanks.

Ok.. you shouldn't plan on a Microsoft OS, let alone one that has been delayed three times. Also, are you saying that because Vista is 32bit and 64bit? For any advantage to be taken with the 64bit CPU, the OS needs to be 64bit and the Application.

Last I checked, the only true difference with 32bit Vista and 64bit Vista is HD Playback. But who cares anyway about Vista since its only a 3D XP. Maybe if Microsoft stuck with the WinFS idea there would be much improvement.

The way to look at it is, when Vista comes out.. The Santa Rosa CPU will be out. Which should be way better then the Core 2 Duo.

Again, can I get an AMEN!

Dude, running Vista has nothing to do with the difference between Core Duo and Core 2 Duo. Anyway, by the time Vista is stable, most of us will have long upgraded our gear. Big deal.

I love it when people talk out of their butts.

Words to live by.

This Metal Box dude is alright in my book. He is a clear fan of the many AW systems he owns, but he's got a nice level head about it. Nice to see that type of person who can see the entire picture. Makes the forum a better place.

Your right. I'm very happy w/my 2.0 GHz Core 1 Duo m5550. I have no issues w/it. Later, when the prices drop, I'll probably upgrade up to the 2.33 GHz Core 2 processor. Alienware Tech Support told me that the motherboards are the same. They didn't know about the BIOS though. On the otherhand, if you just ordered your laptop, before the Core 2 announcement, I would call back and change my order. There is no price difference, and the Core 2 is still a little faster. .

A little. But only in certain areas that a lot of folks will never delve or notice.

Oh yeah, remeber that the Core Duo 1 is on the Intel road map for a good amount of time into the future. So, it is not by any means obsolete. I just don't like seeing everyone getting so worked up.
